I would like to share a few of my favorite things with you:

All-time-favorite Dutch blog:  Klaasjan Tukker

All-time favorite Dutch Java User Group:

All-time favorite summertime drink: A bottle of water that's been left in the freezer just long enough to have ice crystals form that you can crush into tiny pieces just by squeezing gently on the bottle.

the java.sun.com interview with Gosling, penned by the most beauiful and talented Jan Heiss is now out there.

check it out.

and please credit my account for giving you the scoop on this one last week.

EDITOR's NOTE: blog posted at 16:31; at 16:55 winning email lands in my in-box... don't bother reading below... we've got a winner. (not that it's a contest, or anything) mary

p.s. i was planning to do a big celebration for 50K hits on the blog. but frankly i'm running around like a chicken shot in the ass trying to get ready for javaone... so we're doing a mini celebration, right now. first person to send me email saying "give me the 50K prize" gets a duke doll.

email formula: first.last@sun.com. firstname is mary. lastname is smaragdis. sun employees not eligible. this is not a contest. it's me giving away something that i personally own to somebody i choose. i pay for postage.

guess whose blog is going to be co-hosted on java.net for the duration of javaone? (!!!!!!)

here's a hint.

so i guess that means my blog is going "bi" for javaone.

do i work it or what??

mary

p.s. i also just crack myself up. i love the english language. my objective is to maximize its bandwidth. and to do so with minimum capitalization.

Sun Chief Gaming Officer Chris Melissinos actually postponed. He didn't cancel.

And being the class act that he is, he actually offered to do a 1:1 scoop session with me this week.

But regretably, I can't do that. For reasons that are going to remain confidential between me and Melissinos.

the take-aways here:

  1. Melissinos is a class act.
  2. I'm willing to drive to hear you talk. Just not 30 miles.

mary

...more bad news.

so Chris Melissinos, Sun's Chief Gaming Officer ...

...was going to give a talk to Sun employees tomorrow. And I was going to attend live and in person and give you the entire skinny on what he said.

See, I admire this guy for two reasons:

  1. His last name is almost as cool as mine.
  2. Any guy who's title is Chief Gaming Officer knows how to work it. I get free trips to Shanghai and JavaOne and I think I'm good. This guy gets free trips and all the latest gadgets and gizmos. Now that's working it.

anyway, so Melissinos sends around a lame-o note saying "sorry; have to cancel; too busy with JavaOne."

hello!! don't know you i have had this on my calendar and have been looking forward to it for weeks???!!!

i am just so bummed.

mary

well, my friends... i'm afraid that yours truly won't be able to take the Coding Challenge at JavaOne afterall...

it's not because i haven't the faintest clue about how to code Java.

it isn't even because i'm probably the world's worst problem solver when it comes to anything technical.

nope. nothing to do with talent (or lack thereof)

it's my employer. Sun employees aren't eligible to particpate in the contest.

and we can thank Danny Malks (and i think i'll do that in person at his BOF ) for shattering my world today.

guess i can kiss goodbye the t-shirt and messenger bag they're giving away to the first 1,000 people who enter.

:-(

double :-(
