Explicitly and without apology a marketing vehicle MaryMaryQuiteContrary

Wednesday Jun 23, 2004

hi guys,

Just need to set the expectation with you that after JavaOne I'm going on hiatus for a while... big family summer vacation planned.

And this is going to sound crazy but it's totally true -- no easy Internet access during big chuncks of the time.

Just want to give you a head's up so you can't say I didn't tell you.

Here's a place I'm going to visit.

Been there before. I took this picture. That's my father there, leaning against the tree.

Everybody who knows my father, loves my father. He's touched so many lives in such incredible ways.

The greatest compliment anybody can pay me is to say that I'm like my father.

Thing is, more often than not, people tell me I'm like my mother.

:-/

i mean

:-)

mary

so you'll recall that it's one of my missions in life to make personal friends with techno celebs.

one way to become a techno celeb is to have InfoWorld designate you as an Innovator to Watch.

My soon-to-be friend  Hideya Kawahara can put a big check mark next to that one. This fellow -- widely described by Carl Gadener on the plane to Shanghai as a really nice guy --  is the father of Looking Glass. (i know, i was thinking the same thing... looks way too young to be a father...)

and if you're going to JavaOne, you will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with Hideya and the rest of the Looking Glass team. You heard it here first, people. (Unless you're already signed up for the mailing list in which case you got an email on it. I can't always be first. I do my best, OK?)

You are invited to the Project Looking Glass Community Meeting

Wednesday June 30, 2004
4:30pm to 6:00pm
The Argent Hotel, City Room
San Francisco, California, USA
http://www.argenthotel.com/location.htm

4:00-4:30 Registration
4:30-4:45 Welcome, Introductions, and 3D Desktop Project Demo
4:45-5:30 Technology Overview, Possible Sub Projects, How to Get Started
5:30-6:00 Q&A and Networking

Let me underscore here, this isn't for you pansies who want to play around with Looking Glass on your desktop.

This is for you hard core developers who want to talk shop with these guys.

So of course, I'll be going.

Not to talk shop. But because I think they might be giving away some cool free stuff.

And also, of course, to make close personal friends with the newest soon-to-be-member of that tightly knit exclusive community of techno celebs who are my close personal friends.

i'll see you there.

mary

Please check out Gerald Beuchelt's Weblog to see a picture of some really cool toy trains controlled by Java.

Java is everywhere!

Trains. Can you believe it? Trains at JavaOne.

And to think that all ths time I've been giving you a big JavaOne hint -- Choo Choo -- and I wasn't even talking about this.

So how crazy is that?

Anyway, word on the street says that these trains are going to be demo'ed onstage.

I bet we see all kinds of locomotive-type action at JavaOne!

mary

you guys see the eWeek review of Sun Java Desktop System 2?

check it (the review) out. and then. check it (JDS) out.

mary

got a note from a colleague whom we refer to in this space as the "Queen Bee of Hotties at Sun Microsystems," pointing me to this:

In case you haven't heard, please see the email below that landed in my in-box from none other than Tim Bray.

(And I'd like to point out that Simon Brown gave us the head's up on this in a comment he posted  June 17, 2004 at 08:11 AM PDT. I call that out to demonstrate that 1. Simon Brown is in-the-know and 2. I'm not the only one passing out scoop on the MaryMaryQuiteContrary blog.)

mary

p.s. it is clear to me that a certain mr. anonymous dude (who hates it when i don't capitlizes) is disregarding the MaryMaryQuiteContary Partyline. it's obvious that you don't like me. so if you can't ignore me, then i'm going to just have to ignore you. so there.
