Awesome Blogger party tonight at the Thirsty Bear. Awesome, just awesome.

Here are some pictures I took. No time for captions tonight... will go back and add those in the hours ahead.... but for now, take a quick look...

mary

(that's right, Jonathan Schwartz at the blogger party... live and in person... does that mean he's a blogger. well yes it does!)

The second pic of myself and Sam Pullara trying to explain something to a beatroot red Gaving King is very, very amusing. Good shot!

Posted by Hani Suleiman on June 29, 2004 at 04:02 AM PDT

this is me with Cameron Purdy, president, Tangosol. At one point during the course of the evening I saw him and Jonathan talking shop. Tried to eaves drop so i could tell you what they said but at the time was talking to a techno celeb, live and in person -- Tim Bray -- and frankly that was a little more important to me.

And speaking of Tim Bray -- that's him! Techno Celeb. The A list of Internet superstars. And my close personal friend.

Here's me awarding Friday Free Stuff prize to  Luke Hutteman, who by the is the author of  the SharpReader RSS Aggregator. I never did manage to find  Klaasjan Tukker to award  him his prize for Friday Free Stuff. (You'll recall we had multiple winners last week). Klaasjan, you gotta tell me where I can find you so that I can hand-off your prize.

more bloggers, chatting it up. didn't get names on this one.

here's me with Dr. Barry Burd, Drew University professor of mathematics and computer science and celebrated author.

and here's me with Gerald Beuchelt -- the train guy!!

at this point the digital camera said "disk full." but more pics coming to me via email.

i hope.

i've got my fingers crossed on that one, making it difficult for me to type.

mary

check it out people!

live and in person -- Jonathan Schwartz' blog!

Bookmark this page.

i love this place. i just love this place.

mary

you guys, please do me a favor and go look at java.net.

my mug is on the front page.(!!!!)  above the fold!

this is one of my finest moments!

i'm so happy i could pop!

The hottest demo in the entire JavaOne general session keynote program -- witnessed live and in person by 15,000 of the smartest people on the face of the planet -- was the Qnext showcase of technology. This is a must-see! go to the webcast and witness the replay for yourself. It is going to blow you away.

Well, my lovelies, who do I  meet on the Pavilion floor but Oren Asher, Chairman and CEO of Qnext, along with ...

picture of Maurice Singer

Maurice Singer, pictured immediately above and a really nice, guy who lives in Canada who spent a whole bunch of time showing me how this killer technology works and whose name, i'm very embarrassed to admit, i do not remember.

LOVE THESE GUYS! love their technology. This is my top pick. check it out today.

OK. gotta jam. I'm late for the Inner Circle Roundtable.

mary

p.s. did I mention that these guys recognized me and I nearly jumped out of my skin and gave them all a big kiss for telling me that they've read my blog! Lucky for them, I managed to contain myself.

So we're still on the Pavillion floor here...

Take a walk with me, will ya?

Look, there's a guy from Quest.

Quest guy holding t-shirt

They're giving away t-shirts. I told him I'd pmote it in my blog. Took a picture of him -- the whole nine yards... You'd think they would have offered me a free shirt in exchange for the publicity. nope. oh well. it's not that i'm disappointed or anything...

Hey, look! that's Tim Lindholm!! The very same guy who was onstage at JavaOne today! He's such a nice guy. Such a stellar human being!

image of Tim Lindholm

Hi Tim!!!!!!

me and John Shell

Look everybody, it's John Shell!! One of my most favorite guys who works at Sun Microsystems! You'll recall I saw him last in Shanghai.

Kinda crazy how you work at the same company and you only see people in person when everybody's traveling...  love that guy.

And who's that hottie holding that t-shirt...

image of Bao holding t-shirt

... it's Bao Phan!

Me: "How do you get a t-shirt Bao?"
Bao: "You bring in your Sun Developer Network card from last year."
Me: "What about the gumball machine?"
image of gumball giveaway
Bao: "Bring in the your SDN card from last year and you can choose -- t-shirt or gumball machine."

Memebership has its privideleges, people. I keep telling you this. Personally, I am a member of SDN and have been so for a very long time. I'm also a member of the Inner Circle program. And I'll be going to the Inner Circle Roundtable in just a few minutes where I'll have personal 1:1 access to top techno celebs as well as free food and beverages. This could be you, too. Just join these programs and start enjoing the prividleges, like I do.

But wait, there's more... want this this book?
image of Bao holding book

Go see Bao at the Sun Developer Network pod. She'll tell you how to get it. F-R-Double E!

catcha later!

no secret one of my favorite things about JavaOne is collecting free stuff...

on my very quick preliminary round...

the number one place to go to for free stuff is to the Sun pavilion where you can spin the wheel for fabulous prizes!

Wheel of Fortune image

in fact, that's just what my new friend Java developer David Hurst, who works for ACI Worldwide did!

David Hurst holding prize

That's David, there, holding his prize.

What's that? You say David's prize doesn't look so fabulous?

Well, lady luck just wasn't on his side when he got his turn at the wheel today... here's all the other stuff he could have won...

prizes

gifts

But you know what? Everybody's a winner at JavaOne! David -- and everybody else -- gets to play again tomorrow, and on Wednesday.

Who loves you, baby?

mary

Had impromptu lunch with Jim Inscore today. You folks following the schedule closely will note that it was not scheduled.

We were going to go for sushi, but that sushi place over here on 4th is no more -- it's Indian now. So we opted for Thai.

picture of Jim Inscore

In addition to fabulous conversation, I got the following scoops from Jim, who's the man behind Sun Java Studio Creator (which you'll recall is my personal ticket to becoming a Java Developer and Chief Architect Robert (I get to call him Bob) Brewin is a personal techno celeb friend of mine. (not to name drop all the time)...  Anyway... scoop from Inscore...

1. There is a party tomorrow night. Make sure you go by the Sun Java Studio Creator booth to get your ticket. (Free). If you want to crash it: Tuesday, 6/29; The Mezzanine; 444 Jessie Street (at 6th Street); 6-9 p.m. See previous blog entry for the menu.

2. Even hotter than that (if you can even imagine) is there's an incredible special going on at JavaOne... You get Sun Java Studio Creator, the book Sun Java Studio Creator Field Guide

and a one-year SDN Standard subscription for $49.95. Can you believe that??!! Available only at the Digital Guru Bookstore at JavaOne, Upper South Hall.

3. There's a book signing with authors Gail and Paul Anderson (they're married; I asked) and the Java Studio Creator engineering team on Thursday, July 1, noon-12:30. Digital Guru Bookstore.

mary

One of my most favorite things about JavaOne are those guys from Brazil...

Today I met one, live and in person...
photo of Brazil guy

Bruno Peres Ferreira de Souza, here representing Summa Technologies and the larger contingent from Brazil!

mary

here are some quickie photos that i snapped over the course of the past couple hours... just random things/people i encountered...

check out the guys chillin' on the bean bags... it's my personal ambition to secure a bean bag; get it signed by James and give it away for Friday Free Stuff. I will let you know how that goes...

Here's a picture of Ian Buchanan, Senior Solutions Architect for Borland....

engaging in an act of Java Everywhere on the streets of San Francisco. (3rd and Howard if you want to get specific).

And speaking of Borland, they had their general session keynote this afternoon... I popped in to check in on that...

I'm still looking for George Paolini. If you see him, tell him I'm trying to find him.

And remember that guard that told me about not letting beautiful people back out... I ran into him again. And I got his picture... Right back at you, sweetheart!

And I saved the best for last. This guy was on the floor -- booth #521 -- talking about performance anxiety....

Open letter to this guy (and the people who put me on spam email lists about certain related issues):  I am a girl. I am not your target demographic.

Check Intrinsyc. Creativity alone merits a look at their booth -- #521.

this place is out of control!

mary

I have secured for myself a spot as the coveted role of Wheel Spinner on the Pavillion Floor. I will be Spinning the Wheel in about a half hour; and also throughout the course of the week in announced and unannounced intervals.

We will have pictures.

Stay tuned.

mary

here's the line-up of press releases Sun released today. don't feel like scrolling -- go here.

I think you'll find that if you're a read-between-the-lines type of guy, you already knew some of this stuff... because you're a MaryMaryQuiteContary reader. and you're, therefore, in-the-know. ;-)

three things:

1. Resolved the issue with the image size. thanks for your patience.

2. Big thank you to Dan Lacher for helping me with #1.

3. Let's say there's a long line for employees to get their badges. And somebody offers you somebody else's badge. And you say: "Score. I'm all over that."

Wrong. That would be a very bad idea.

Let's just say I'm wearing my own name badge now. And there's a certain set of guards at Moscone that I'll be avoiding.

You think they put that little encounter on my permanent record?

Better get out the wig. ;-)

mary

they brought a real tiger onstage!!!

how neat is that??

(i was a little worried until i saw it, frankly... you know what happened to that guy in vegas with the tiger...)

other hot, breaking development... t-shirt toss... here's your pic....

boys. and their power tools.

Listen, Jon Byous is writing a big feature on the T-shirt hurling contest so keep it tuned to java.sun.com to get details on that.

mary

p.s. for the record, i am working it for you. i go straight up to the very front and boldly take these pics for you. i have no shame. a "real" photog told me "You need to back up, lady." when i went for the tiger shot. i'm putting it on the line for you, people.

p.p.s. I'm still mad at NPR for the whole Bob Edwards thing. I'm seriously missing Gage here and I'm trying to come to terms with it. It's not JavaOne without Gage. Don't make me stop contributing.

i'm having an issue with the size of the pictures... sorry it's impacting you, my loyal readers. need you to know that i'm all over it and will resolve. thanks in advance for bearing with me as i work through this technical issue. (me figuring out how to operate a digital camera).

mary

p.s. i seriously was going to try to give the spell check and capitalization thing a try... but you know what... it's just not me... sorry... more than i can manage.

Got some exlusive photos for you as the keynotes were about to get started... JavaOne is the epicenter of activity for techno celebs this week! Techno celeb to your left, tecno celeb to your right... it's just unbelievable... they're everywhere. I'm beside myself over here... check out who I saw...

That's Graham, Tim, Bill... getting ready to go onstage... they were very nice to me... Graham seems a little annoyed whenever he sees me; The others just kinda ignore me. no hard feelings. I know they love me deep in their hearts. They just have funny ways of showing it.

Lookie-there... James Gosling talking to Ingrid (who may just be my next boss) .quick. look busy.

And my fave, absolute fave... Jonathan Schwartz sees me taking pictures.. he waves... what a guy!!

There's talk of a real tiger onstage during the keynote... gotta quick get back in there and see what's going on... big kiss!
