Don't say I didn't tell you. Weeks and weeks ago I started dropping big hints about something that is happening at JavaOne. And today I'm prepared to spill the beans -- the JavaOne beans...

Grammy Award-winning rock band Train headlines the 2004 JavaOne After Dark Bash. The band, known for its hit songs "Calling All Angles, Drops of Jupiter and "Meet Virginia" bends lush instrumentals and insightful lyrics sung by the band's lead singer and songwriter, Pat Monahan.

I've been telling you all this time... Choo Choo.

Pretty neat, eh?!!

Remember how I told you we're not doing Friday Free Stuff this week?

I lied.

Here's an early look at what we'll be giving away...

Remember, Friday Free Stuff is not a contest. It's me giving away something that I personally own to somebody I choose.  Inside scoop: the judge (me) likes it when the people who play Friday Free Stuff are SDN members. Membership has its privileges.

Click and Hack the type-it brothers...

picture of click and hack

aka Dr. Joshua Bloch and Dr. Neal Gafter  presented their afternoon session  -- Still More Programming Puzzlers to a packed crowd...

And afterwards they were mobbed by groupies, including me.

Here's some scoop for you: check out JavaOne online tomorrow later this afternoon to get an exclusive puzzler right from these guys.

Solution to be published tomorrow.

I work it for you.

T-shirt throw rounded out the big keynote program today.

These guys built this contraption... it's like the Cat in the Hat...

the story is best captured in pictures...

Should we tell her about it?
Oh what would we say?
Should we tell her the things that went on here this day?
Should we tell her about it?
Oh what should we do?
Well, what would you do if your mother asked you?

(love that book.)

Also onstage today during Day 2 keynote was Chris Mellissinos, Sun's Chief Gaming Officer. (a title I covet. not really. i don't really like to play games. but i seriously want to be Sun's Chief Something Officer. I don't actually know what the Something is yet. I'm working on it.

OK... Mellissinos... awesome appearance during the keynotes.. You'll have to check it out on replay... I did want to call out...

onstage pic

Kevin Bachus, president and COO of  Infinium Labs. You gotta go to their web site people. Really neat home page.

This guy used to be a Microsoft employee. (see how Scott's looking at him kinda suspicious-like). He's one of the four guys who created Xbox. So he knows a thinkg or two about gaming.

And you know what he's doing?? Launching the first on-demand gaming experience. And wouldn't you know it -- totally Java. Completely Java Powered. LOVE IT!

awesome stuff.

onstage shot...

That's him on stage with Scott during Day 2 keynote. That's where they announced this!  Hideya he's the cute one. Just kidding, Scott.... uh, not really actually. ;-)

You want to meet Hideya up close and personal? (That's what I am going to do as I have to meet him in person before I can technically call him my friend.)

p.s. it's really starting to annoy me that Jim Grisanzio keeps scooping me. I gotta get on it or you guys are going to go to him to get your scoop, and that would just devastate me.
We had the whole pre-keynote anxious anticipation happening today... here are some pictures I snapped real quick ..

Ingrid, Jonathan

There's Ingrid talking to Jonathan before the keynotes got started. I got to chat with her briefly too... love her! i'm working an angle to get Al Riske to do a Contarian Minds on her. guess what: Ingrid=MaryMaryQuiteContrary reader! serious as a heart attack. She offered to take a picture of me with Scott. Passed on that one. Career advice: it's not such a good idea to have the big boss know who you are if you're blogging on company time.

Bruno

And there's Bruno. My buddy from Brazil's SouJava.

james

Hi James!!!!! (i think i vaguely remembers me but he can't quite place me... like... does she work for Sun or is she one of the mom's i see at the playground that annoy me so... he doesn't quite know... and in this picture he's thinking about it.)

me and Klaasjan

There's me and Klaasjan Tukker...

my favorite Dutch Java Developer who runs the hottest Dutch Java User Group on the face of the planet. He hooked me up with a killer polo shirt and an pin ...
inmage of a pin

...stating that I am an official member of the Nederlandse Java User Group!

I've got stuff for him too. I'm going to give it to him at the Inner Circle Roundtable today at 5 p.m. at the Argent. (if you want to crash it, just show up... i'll get you in.) Tim Bray and Simon Phipps are featured speakers.

Then we got into the Scott's keynote...
Scott onstage

... that's all for now... stay tuned for continuing coverage.

mary
