Pop quiz: How many degrees of separation between MaryMaryQuiteContrary (suburban wife, mother of three young children who masquerades as a marketing professional during working hours) and Bono (rock star, social activist, Nobel Peace Prize nominee)?

A: One

One love.

One life.

That's right, through an unbelievable set of circumstances I am business manager and project lead on this:

Press Release Source: Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Sun Microsystems Teams With Bono to Fulfill His Wish for One Million Voices to Join the ONE Campaign
Friday February 25, 8:55 am ET

Lots and lots to tell you about. Details to come. Can't now because I got a hot potato to deal with on this whole thing.

Two big take-aways:

1. Dan Malks is the technical lead on this project. John Crupi is our executive technical sponsor. I think both these guys are going to start blogging soon. Gonzo was in on it from the beginning and he's already talking about it in his blog. I'm gonna tell you about what I'm doing on this project in mine. So you'll get the full skinny on all fronts.

2. Sun Microsystems ROCKS THE HOUSE!

mary

p.s. Have you notice there's been this lingering smell of bacon in the air for the past few weeks or so? That's my rear end. It's been on fire since the day I got this assignment. It's totally out of control how busy I am. The up side is that a) I love my work; and b) I finally figured out a way to shrink my rear end without exercising.

if you want to kiss the sky better learn how to kneel, people.

HUGE big day today.

Let's get this party started with Friday Free Stuff!!

Here's a picture of the most lovely and talented Jami modeling the t-shirt

Jami looking all gorgeous

Jami ROCKS, you guys. She is personally responsible for a substantial shipment of free stuff falling off the truck right in front of my house. You my lovelies -- YOU -- are the personal beneficiaries of this. Please join me in thanking Jami. She's awesome. She also happens to move in mysterious ways.

OK. Gotta go.

I'm gonna go on a dive with my brother Johnny. He's going to let me talk about the things you can't explain.

(hint, hint.)

mary

p.s. stay tuned. i got HUGE news. HUGE. shift. reload.

p.p.s. i'm behind on fulfillment on Friday Free Stuff. I got a ton of stuff to send out from previous weeks and also i need to make the rounds and collect addresses from last week. bear with me. when you find out what i've been working on, you'll understand.

Happy Friday Everybody!

I'd like to officially inform you that I am living the vida loca over here, people. Inside. Outside. Upside down.

(wrong artist but you get the idea)

I'll tell you all about it soon.

Meanwhile...

Java Get Powered logo

It's with great pleasure we unveil the Java Get Powered logo!!!

This logo is available to Java technology enthusiasts everywhere. It's Free. Unlimited right to use (on blogs and websites). All you gotta do is take a quiz... three questions...  then you get permission to use the logo.

how sweet is that?

and to celebrate...

Jamie showcasing the prize

We'll be giving away Java Get Powered magnetic bumper stickers to anyone -- to EVERYONE -- who asks me to send them one by posting a comment to this blog entry. (That's beautiful girl Jami showcasing the prize. You might recall that Jami is responsible for some boxes containing free stuff falling off of trucks right outside my house. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Jami.)

But wait, there's more.

Download the Java Get Powered logo, put it on your website/blog and point me to it (by posting a comment to this blog entry) and I'll send you a T-shirt with the Java Get Powered logo on it (in addition to the bumper sticker). (!)

(i'm trying to get Jami to model the T-shirts; let's just say we're still working the issues... )

But wait, there's even more than that...

We're going to have a T-shirt contest! Details on that next week.

So that's the story, folks.

Download the Java Get Powered logo today.

Bon weekend!

mary

(See what happens to me when the Puzzler leaves me for so long? T-shirt contests. And you thought formulas were bad. Not that I mind, of course. Oh no, not at all. It's only been 13 consecutive weeks (not that anybody's counting). I don't really mind treading water out here all on my own in shark-infested waters for three consecutive months.)

p.s. it's truly free. i pay for shipping.

First person to tell me what gets a stainless steel coffee mug...

NIB

Post a comment to this blog entry to get in on this game.

mary

p.s. No stealing. I'm going to tell you how to get one (and incent you to do that) tomorrow for Free Stuff. If you steal from me it will break my heart (and black-list you forever and ever on the free stuff).

These beta exams qualify toward Solaris 10 Certification, allow you to provide comments and technical feedback, and are completely FREE!

pretty neat, eh?

Can you feel the love?

Mary

p.s. I'd like to thank a really nice blog reader (from whom I did not ask/receive permission to name) for giving me this lead.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce the guest judges who'll assist me in awarding the Free Stuff we've got on the table.

Meet ...
Crupi cheezing it up for the camera

John Crupi and...

Danny looking all year book-ish

Dan Malks.

These are my judges, together with .

Deepak looking all serious

Deepak Alur (who's an honorary judge).

Pop quiz: What do these three guys have in common?

A. They hold membership to that exclusive and tightly-knit community of techno celebs who are my close personal friends
B. They co-authored Core J2EE Patterns

What Experts Say about the book:

"This book is essential for J2EE developers and has helped reinvigorate the patterns movement."
- Martin Fowler, Chief Scientist, ThoughtWorks
(Read the Foreword)

"... It's just like having a team of experts sitting at your side."
- Grady Booch, Chief Scientist, Rational Software Corporation
(Read the Foreword)

"...This book will have a significant impact on your organization!"
- Terry Bone, J2EE Frameworks and Services Manager, Ford Financial (Read more...)

Read more expert opinions...

C. They've been cast in the re-make of The Three Amigos
D. All of the above

I asked these techno celebs extraordinaire(s) to carefully review the responses to last week's Friday Free Stuff and pick a winner.

They chose Alex, who wins our spectacular prize package!

the spectacular prize package

Alex's winning comment:

I'd really like the package because I think I deserve the perk, being that I'm currently "stuck" in Africa (more preciously in Luanda/Angola) setting up the national electronic payment system (for ATMs & POSs) on Sun hardware, I've even convinced the board in purchasing a dozen Sun Rays for monitoring /helpdesk purposes. The package would make my work here all the worth while! :-)

A national electronic payment system on Sun hardware and Sun Rays for monitoring -- that's all the judges (and Sun Ray Girl) need to hear to get things going in the right direction.

Congratulations, Alex! You win!!

Now wasn't there something about a brand promise....

Oh yeah!  Free Stuff is the brand promise of MaryMaryQuiteContrary so everybody who posted to last week's Friday Free Stuff gets....

really nice ink pen

a pen!

So that closes that one out...

Tomorrow we're going to have a super-spectacular Friday Free Stuff, people.

Don't get your hopes up. I think the Puzzleris still on vacation.

But I'm trying to talk Jami into modeling something we'll be giving away...

And I think we're going to be delivering on the brand promise big time...

just to give you something to think about...

shift. reload.

kiss, kiss!

Monday Feb 14, 2005

Through an unbelievable set of circumstances, I've been having regular conversations with none other than John Gage.

(not to brag, or anything.)

The reason that this is relevant is that I'm now one degree of separation from everybody who's anybody in the world's technology, political, and cultural circles.

John Gage knows (and has dinner with) them all.

me and Gage in China

(here's a picture of me w/Gage in China. I got to have (free) breakfast with him because I am a member of the Inner Circle and Boardroom programs (which are also free).

So I'm feeling kind of special right now. I got a little glow going on today.

Pop Quiz: What do John Gage and I have in common?

A: We're both Sun employees.

Thinking you might like to have something in common with John Gage too?

let me hook you up.

:-)

It's with great pleasure that I introduce you to MonkChips (of RedMonk fame).

(I call him Governor James, though I didn't actually ask for permission to do that.)

I did a swivel, swivel, double-snap when I finished reading this one, people. Well worth checking out.
