three things today on the official agenda, then you get a personal update...

1. Send in your pics of Duke celebrating the one-year anniversary of java.net. deadline: today. first person to send a pic in and tell Daniel you heard about it here gets a FREE stuffed Duke toy. (see yesterday's entry)

2. Bookmark http://research.sun.com. It's the Sun Labs website. This is where you go to find out what Sun is doing with (at least some of)it's $2 b-b-b-billion annual investment in R&D... Today you'll find a story there about where we are wrt implementations and deployment of long-promised iTV, VOD and Web-based TV services. The article examines the enabling technologies conceived and developed at Sun Labs, and Sun's role as a key provider of media-ready infrastructure for total digital distribution systems. (Charlie Jackson sent this one in; he's gone on the record voting for blond.)

3. I got a note from my boss telling me to go ahead and put in for javaone travel (!) so it looks like i get to go to the world's largest developer conference! and as i'm well on my way to becoming a java developer myself, that's oh-so-appropriate.

now, on to the personal front...

i'm a busy woman. i got a full-time job and three kids under the age of 5. lucky for me, i'm married to the most wonderful guy in the entire world. we call him he-who-must-not-be-named here. (i got busted big time in the early days for talking about him even though he very politely asked me not to.) but i've noticed he's not monitoring this blog as closely as he used to... maybe you'll be getting some detail on this front... let's play it by ear... once burned; twice shy (is that a real saying or did i just make that up?)

anyway, the point of this is that i've decided to share some of my tricks-of-the-trade ... think of them as a working mother's Hints from Heloise... these are things i do to get my family through the day...

  • Tip #412: Your car's a junk-mobile. You open a door to get a kid and junk falls out of it. (This always happens at church; right when one of your mother's friends comes over to say hello.) You decide you've had enough -- you can simply no longer live this way. You get the "big" junk (shoes, toys, books) cleaned up but you've got cheerios, saltine crumbs, and the stray french fry all over the place. it would take hours to vacuum it. you don't have time time (or the energy). and you're too cheap to take it to the car wash because it's not like you live in California where you can get your car washed for under $10 bucks. you're looking at $30 min. Here's what you do. 1. Open all the doors of your car; 2. Make sure there aren't any neighbors looking; 3. Get out your leaf blower and go to town. Guaranteed to work in less than 2 minutes.

that's it for today, folks.

don't forget to send in your pictures to java.net.
