Explicitly and without apology a marketing vehicle MaryMaryQuiteContrary

Friday Oct 27, 2006

I am thrilled to announce that today's Free Stuff give-away is anchored around two women with whom I've got a special connection. Three really. The first two:

Jan Heiss. She is one of the most talented writers that I know. I'm not the only one who thinks so. She once received a proposal of marriage from a reader. (seriously)

Jean Elliot. She used to be my boss. When my #2 was born she came over to my house and gave me tons of gifts including a book of Girl's Favorite Stories, which we still treasure today.

What brings these two women together?

Jan interviewed Jean.

Step up the Java Technology Ladder: A Conversation With Sun's Director of Product Marketing for the Java SE Platform, Jean Elliott October 26, 2006
Step up the Java Technology Ladder: A Conversation With Sun's Director of Product Marketing for the Java SE Platform, Jean Elliott
Jean Elliott, Sun's director of product marketing for the Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE), discusses how to make optimal use of the platform.

And what does that have to do with me?

They're at the epicenter of today's Free Stuff!

(Free Stuff is the brand promise of MaryMaryQuiteContrary. I am a marketing girl. I know a thing or two about brand promises.)

Thanks to a monster hook-up (we've got the beautiful and talented Maria S. to thank -- she rounds out our troika), I've got in my possession the most sought-after hot item of the season -- the Project Black Box give-away.

Indeed, because Maria is the generous type ...

I've got three!!

We'll be awarding these fabulous prizes to the people who read the interview Jan did with Jean and post a comment to this blog entry remarking on their favorite thing about said interview.

Play (along) for your chance to win* by following these easy steps:

1. Read the interview
2. Post a comment remarking on it. The most fascinating, insightful, thought provoking, funny comment(s) will win the prize(s).
3. If  you post a picture of a Project Black Box scenario you pretty much guarantee yourself a win.

Happy Friday!

Mary

p.s. I just love mass-ups. Project Black Box + Java Platform Standard Edition + MaryMaryQuiteContrary + three other Sun ladies = Free Stuff. Don't you just love the blog-o-sphere? :-)

p.p.s. *this is not a contest. I don't do contest. I give away things that I own to people I choose.

Comments:

Larry might provide "better" support for Java than Sun at 50% of the price ;-) ?

Thanks, Scott. Madhan:you'd increase your chances if you stayed "on message" as we like to stay in the biz. But you made me laugh, so you're in the running. :-) mary

I totally think they forgot the one of it sitting in my driveway as a remote MI data center... and then I could run the hot water lines under the driveway and not have to shovel my butt off.

But since you only have three leave me out of the running... send them along to folks with other ideas. How was NY?

Well, this piece: We support the current products family plus two versions back, so we are about to end our support for J2SE 1.3 when Java SE 6 comes out in December. Should be widely publicized. It implies that J2SE 1.4 will be EOLed by the beginning of 2008, if Dolphin gets released as planned. There are plenty J2SE 1.4-based applications out there, mainly because of the language changes in Java SE 5 and some obscure incompatibilities (JMX changes and the bizarre Timestamp class cast bug, now fixed, comes to mind).

The SDN community has grown considerably in the last year. Talk about open source licence for Java, I think it's time to get me a trucking licence with JS 's new Mobile Datacenters. I can code on the road! ;)

[Trackback] Sometimes things come together and a wonderfull idea is born; Sun launching Project Blackbox, some holiday pictures and a blogpost from Mary. What could we do if we combine these? < a href="/files//project_blackbox_nljug.jpg"> Well, create the ultim...

What could you do with project blackbox ? Wow... the ultimate NL-JUG event.... follow the link above... With regards to the Roadmap, in my company we actually skip Java5 and switch to Java6 directly coming from J2SE 1.4. To my opinion, Java5 had some serious issues (regression bugs) in the earlier version which gave us a lot of trouble in our desktop application (sorry, Dutch only). So it’s very nice that J2SE 1.4 is supported for such a long period; let’s hope that the transition (including all our customer installations) is done somewhere next year…

In the bible, the Noah's Ark saved Noah's family and other animals during the flood...

While many people believe Noah's Ark story and many people don't... one thing for sure is that as we are burning more fossil fuel, the green-house effect will bring us more flooding, more storms in the next few centuries. Eventually, all the datacenters in the world would be flooded but the only ones left would be those carried on cargo ships :D

Hi Mary. I am going point out five things what i grasped from the interview with Jean.

1.Where do things stand with the Java SE platform? Where is it headed?
A)Absolutely Yes.AnyTime... Everywhere...

2.Tell us about Sun's support policy as it relates to the different versions of the Java SE platform.
A)Ready for Migration from any version to the Latest.

3.Can you refer us to any case studies of companies that have made the transition to Tiger?
A)BECOME.COM,WAL-MART.COM and of-course GOOGLE.COM...Jus examples...

4.What is the role of java.com?
A)15 Million visitors a Month.

5.Any closing thoughts?
A)Only to encourage folks to update their use of the Java platform, which continues to improve by leaps and bounds. They won't be disappointed.

I feel great about Jean for her unmatching examples and quotes.
