  • A PLUSH DUKE DOLL! (value: priceless)
This week's Friday Free Stuff is in  honor and celebration of

the t-shirt hurling contest logo

(!)

Here's what you do to win*.

1. Think up an idea for how to hurl a t-shirt through the air before a gathering of many thousands of the world's smartest Java developers (JavaOne attendees).

2. Submit your idea as a proposal, officially entering yourself into the T-Shirt Hurling Contest1

3. Post a comment to this entry outlining your idea.

I'll pick my favorite idea. That person will get the Free Stuff shipped directly to their doorstep free of charge. The deadline for submitting proposals in the T-Shirt Hurling Contest is Tuesday, March 15. I'll pick my favorite and award this week's Friday Free Stuff* shortly thereafter.

Editor's note: I recommend doing step 2 before step 3 to prevent somebody from stealing your idea. You don't technically have to submit your idea in the official contest to play Friday Free Stuff this week. (I'd have no way of checking.) So if you're unable/unwilling to play with the big boys by submitting your idea in the official T-Shirt Hurling contest, you can still play here. Because I'm a mother and I totally get it.

Fun, fun, fun!!

bon weekend!

p.s. I'm so sick of winter I can hardly stand it. Another day below freezing temperatures today. To help me beat the winter blues, somebody who loves me (and that feeling is mutual) got me another pair of strappy sandals which I absolutely adore. Black. So cute. I'd post a picture but I'm afraid you guys might start to think I'm weird. I just CAN NOT WAIT to wear these shoes outside. Vanessa, my favorite Brazilian Java developer sent me a note telling me that I could wear them right away if I came to Tech Days in Brazil. If only. Regrettably, that's not in the cards for me. Despite my very best efforts.

* Friday Free Stuff is not a contest. It's me giving away stuff that I personally own to people I choose. Generally I'm pretty arbitrary about who wins* but sometimes my decisions have some logic behind them. I am the judge. My decisions are final.

1 The Official T-shirt hurling contest is a bona fide contest with a purse of more than $10,000 (cash) and all kinds of other goodies.

Comments:

  1. Thread ribbons of magnesium through all seams of T-shirt (to ensure maximum illumination/effect for spectators)
  2. Put T-shirt on inventor of C#
  3. Sit "t-shirt" on top of large Oxyacetaline cylinder in a glasshouse
  4. Flood glasshouse with equal parts of butane, oxygen and propane
  5. Insert cigarette into inventors mouth (for comedy effect)
  6. Fire gun (conveniently fitted with teflon coated/tipped bullets), from <font size="+1"> VERY LONG</font> way away, into Oxyacetaline cylinder - taking great care not to hit inventor (we don't want to hurt him, that's not our job - the glass and magnesium will do more than enough of that!)
  7. Watch, remembering to pay close attention to where inventor lands so T-Shirt can be quickly extinguished and auctioned off to raise large quantites of cash for pre-chosed good cause!

Okay, so I don't expect to win, but it's *my* dream and you can't take it away from me! <img src="http://rimron.co.uk/weblog/wp-images/smilies/icon_razz.gif" border="0">

PS. not submitted to Offical content for (hopefully) obvious reasons

Have Bono dressed as Duke hurl the t-shirts. Naaah. It will never happen.

A simple way:

1. Attach a wheel to a (high power) drilling machine.

2. Attach a set of shirts to the edges of the wheel, using some thin strings, a separate string for each shirt. Each of the strings should also wrap a shirt so that the shirt forms a kind of a ball, _without_ knots.

3. Switch the drilling machine on.

4. When the centrifugal force is strong enough, the strings break and the shirts fly away, unwrapping theirselves from the broken strings at the same time.

Advantage: the shirts fly more or less at once and in different directions.

Disadvantage: the shirts fly more or less at once and in different directions.

;)

PS. I did not submit it to the official contest and I do not know if the simple idea was not already used in some other shirt hurling.

;D ;D ;D

<strong>GRAVITY<strong/>

An overhead contraption (like the cameras they hang over the stadium for a NFL game that can film moving with the action) that looks like Duke dropping t-shirts on the guest. Wouldn't it be cool to see Duke flying around the room dropping t-shirts on everyone!!!</>

Hope this doesn't miss the entry, I'm on a trip to Japan, and although its Wed am here it is still Tue in the US.
Here's the idea.
Have a radio controlled mini airship (the kind you can get from the gadget shop and such places) with the t-shirt attached to a java powered gripper. The direction control of the airship is connected up via a server and can be controlled via a server. The ship turns left when the server receives a java sms, and right when it receives a web hit to the servlet. When the total number of hits reaches a predetermined maximum the gripper is released and the t-shirt drops down onto the lucky person below. I would enter it but I don't have time to build it. If anyone else wants to feel free. Peter

Get one of those kids' make a rocket from a 2 litre soda bottle kits, and drape the t-shirt elegantly over the top, whilst you shoot it into the stratosphere, or just a couple of feet up due to the extra weight of the t-shirt :)
