Happy Friday Everybody!

Countdown: 73 days to JavaOne.

In celebration (and anticipation) it's my great pleasure to announce all-time highest volume give-away in MaryMaryQuiteContary history!

(!!!!)

Post a comment to this blog entry...

java pin and christmas ornament

receive either

1. A Java pin (it was all the rage in Olympic village)

or

2. A Duke ornament (to put a little jingle in your bells)

You get what you get and you don't get upset. Chair is not included. It's being used for display (and brand placement) purposes only.

A very select random* few will get both.

(!!!!!!!)

Post a comment to this blog entry telling me you want in on the free stuff and it's yours.

It's truly free. I pay for shipping with stamps that I buy at the post office.

(No promises on how long it will take me to actually  make it to the post office, as previous Free Stuff winners can attest to.)

To improve your chances of being randomly* selected, tell me what you'd like to see more of at JavaOne this year. I'm going to a core team meeting Monday and I can pass the good word.

Keep it clean, people. This is a family rated program.

Bon weekend!!

mary

* there's really nothing random about it. i pick my favorites

Hey Mary, Friday's looking up!
I would love to see myself at JavaOne, but it just ain't going to happen. But then, my current idea of a good thing in Java is Solaris-specific JNI code :-)
(I prefer the pin, but won't get at all upset!)

Posted by Peter Tribble on April 22, 2005 at 03:07 PM PDT #

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Java free stuff! Of course, I'd love some. :)

What would I like to see at JavaOne? How about a MaryMary BOF? (I know. I'm also a blatant suck-up.)

Actually, my main interest is in J2EE technology and the relationship between Java and Open Source. Of course, since this will be my first JavaOne, I'll probably be spending a lot of time walking around with my mouth open and my eyes bugging out of my head looking like a kid in a toy store in December. Complete with goofy "this is way cool" smile, I'm sure.

hi mary, i would like to have some advantages in JAVA ONE 1.More Emphasis on Mobile Technology 2.There will Competition With Microsoft .NET Finally JavaOne Would Win ,why because of wireless Technology included in it.Java Will Continue to Dominate.Already in China 12 Million Phones sold with java Application.today, is in the old dream of "write the code once, and it will run on every machine you can find, whatever the operating system." There's almost no hardware today which won't run Java in some form, and the range is increasing, not decreasing. And Gift is Excellent. Please offer me the Gift

Hi Mary! I hope you remember me. People reading this post will think 'what a sad, presumptuous little man, thinking Mary will remember him'. Little do they know! *evil laugh* If you see fit to bestow Free Stuff upon me, I shall keep it forever!

I want in on the free stuff. A pin would be sweet :D You rock!

Posted by Alden Merchant on April 23, 2005 at 12:53 PM PDT #

What has happened to http://planetsun.org? Is it just me that is unable to connect? (My God, that would be kind of sad.) You mean I have to go directly to MaryMaryQuiteContrary specifically to learn about all the stuff.

Posted by Stephen Marney on April 23, 2005 at 04:14 PM PDT #

I'm just doing this to improve my Dad's chances of getting a pin. I figure I'll make it 3 out of 4 for him. Besides it would only be fair for me to help him out because he gave me a Solaris 10 t-shirt. I'm not sure whether that should count since it didn't even fit him. But, you know, fathers ...

Posted by Lia Marney on April 23, 2005 at 04:18 PM PDT #

Hi Mary, The Duke ornament would look good on my tree! As far as JavaOne goes... Infortunately I'm not going, nor have I ever gone. Projects and money always seem to get in the way (this year its money). So, what would I like to see there this year? Me. I know someone already said something like that, but its true. ;)

Posted by Damien on April 23, 2005 at 10:26 PM PDT #

Hi Mary!!!! Long time no chat... The pin really looks good... Can I have one too... it will really look good on my pin collection!!! More power to your blog site!!! Regards, Mac

Hmmm... What I'd like to see at JavaOne... I'd like to see Mary at JavaOne. :D Of course, that would also require *me* to attend.

Hi Mary, I'm more of a server-centric developer, but I'd really like to check out the new desktop improvements of the Mustang JVM. Sun should develop a kit for easy integrating Java software on JDS; and maybe (even though there are 3rd party products) for Windows too. Are there any pins left? :-)

I'd like Java Pin, please...

Hmmm - I'd really like to be in on the free stuff :) Can't say that I'll be at JavaOne, but if I get freebies, I promise to take them down to LUGRadio Live! at the end of June :)

Hi Mary, I'm pretty good on the Freebee front, actually! :) But just thought I'd post an update. I've promised to take part of my goodie back your sending me and, as it happens, give it away at LUGRadio Live! all in the name of your good work :) Dunno what part that'll be, but probably not the best bits :) -D

Posted by Karthikeyan.B on April 25, 2005 at 04:25 AM PDT #

Hi Mary, as always, freebies are great! I'd especially love the ornament. :-) As for JavaOne, I won't be able to attend this year unfortunately. If I did, I'd like to see talks on lightweight containers (ala spring) and cool java applications especially games. I've gotten sucked into a MMORPG that's called runescape whose client is deployed as a java applet. Bryan

Posted by Bryan on April 25, 2005 at 05:25 AM PDT #

Hi, Mary. You know I love you and count you as one of my close personal friends, but I have yet to receive any of the free stuff you promised me. First it was the tiger, then you promised other stuff, but still nothing. Oh, well, I'll give you another chance. I know what I would like to see at JavaOne. A travel voucher, that's what 8-(. Me at JavaOne with a travel voucher, yeh, uh, a picture of me having lunch with you at JavaOne and a travel voucher, yea! that's the ticket. You, Me, Lunch, JavaOne, travel voucher, all together. I think JavaOne needs more dancing. You can never have enough dancing. Get Scott and Johnathan up there dancing. Everyone knows people make decisions based on how well there leaders dance.

Well, it may not be Friday, but we aren't at your limit of 73 yet according to the blog counter, so I'm just going to throw my hat in the ring and see what happens.

What would I like to see more of at JavaOne? Hmmm .... I'd like to see coverage, no matter how insignificant, of the new Java Core Processor. (http://www.jopdesign.com/) Very experimental, this isn't even bleeding edge, it's full on amputation. (Plans to build your own breadboard included)

Java is designed (as we all know) to write once run anywhere, but there was this idea a while ago about what it would take to embed the JVM into hardware, and cut out all middle management and just let the software do it's job. Someone else actually has put something together for a college thesis, and it's very interesting. Take a look.

Mary, I did leave a comment before but unfortunately could not see it anymore. Let me try again: I would like to see more of 'BPEL' related discussions at Java ONE. And yes please send me the Duke.

JAVAOne? how i wish you guys could drop by Manila for a fantastic conference. Sun Microsystem just held a conference last year (Sun Tech days 2003-2004)it was a great experience for me not just because of the cool stuff but also the knowledge transfer the speakers have shared. Again more power!

Posted by dB on April 27, 2005 at 12:08 AM PDT #

Hi, I'd love something/anything, I don't really mind which, it's just nice to receive something in the post that is not a bill!!! At Java One I'd like the ability to see more than one thing at the same time, as all the things I'm interested in tend to overlap...

Posted by Peter Allday on April 27, 2005 at 01:30 AM PDT #

Love JAVA,Ofcourse JAVA ONE too. Hii Mary, after reading these salient features of JAVA ONE,Pls reply me whether it is useful to u or not. What's surprising at JavaOne? While standing in line waiting for a session, or having lunch , you might find yourself striking up an interesting discussion with other developers. Here are some examples of conversations that took place about what's really surprising and interesting at JavaOne: JXTA: "I was really impressed by JXTA. I didn't realize how rich it was... it really seems to be able to enable an agent peer-to-peer system, and it probably could be an interesting platform for Artificial Intelligence-like work. You create agents with a bunch of simple rules and infer a result from something out of their emerging behavior. In one of the JXTA technical sessions, the BBN guys showed a homeland security demonstration for detecting intrusions into a perimeter. JXTA peers would be attached to motion sensors, seisemic sensors, radars, etc. There wasn't a huge configuration nightmare for communication, and JXTA served as a way of reducing the amount of input coming into a system. The peers could collaborate and were able to create a hypothesis about whether something entering a perimeter was a target or not. One agent by itself has outliers and may infer an intruder inaccurately, but a peer to peer system could use heuristics to figure out what was actually going on." J2SE 1.5 improvements: "It really seems that Sun is pulling out all the stops with J2SE 1.5 improvements, leaving no stone unturned in being reviewed and potentially improved. J2SE 1.5 will probably be the biggest release since 1.2. Let's just hope it isn't as delayed as 1.2 was!" Foxtrot: One developer at lunch mentioned the Foxtrot framework for Swing/JFC , available at foxtrot.sf.net as a great alternative to the many clunky mechanisms for dealing with long operations in a Swing/JFC GUI. The Foxtrot technical session provided a good overview of the code differences between SwingWorker and Foxtrot, with Foxtrot providing easier ways of dealing with exceptions and dealing with a conceptually easier model than the asynchronicity of SwingWorker. ALL THE BEST. waiting for ur reply.
