hey you guys!
back from the big family vacation. had a spectacular time. but it's really nice to be home again. home sweet home.
tons of email to catch up on so i'll be brief...
1. it's summertime, summertime where i live. sweltering heat outside. it's nothing compared the hot-hot-hottest thing on ebay ... here's a little cut-and-paste for you...
Sun has just launched an exciting new lineup of servers and workstations based on the screaming fast AMD Opteron processor — and we're marking the event by auctioning a limited supply of these
high-performance 64-bit workhorses, as well as unbeatable hardware,
software, and service bundles.
i'm telling you, this is hot. Jonathan Schwartz wrote about the whole ebay thing in his blog. get on ebay and start bidding. carpe diem, people. and just to prove how much i love you: the diem these auctions end is August 6.
2. you've got to check out the Q&A with Whitfield (i call him Whit, but never in front of him) Diffie that's running on java.sun.com. Whit invented the concept of public key cryptography, an invention a hot-shot at Stanford called "the most important technological breakthrough in the last thousand years."
pop quiz: What to Whit and I have in common? We both have Sun badges. I just love this place. I know you've heard me say it before but it's so true... some of the smartest people on the face of the earth work at this company. I'm the exception that proves the rule. Whit is a techno celeb. You know i am longing to welcome him into that tightly knit and exclusive community of techno celebs who are my close personal friends... but i'll come clean with you here...we're not even close. he doesn't know me from Adam. but we all need something to strive for... maybe i'll put that on the list..
3. so i put on a couple pounds during the big vacation. ok, more than a couple... a few... anyway... here's a little story for you... so i'm in the hotel and i need to go to the room to get something... i head for the stairwell... jam up the stairs...figure it will do me good... there's lady there cleaning the stairs... she stops me... she thinks i'm lost... tells me where the elevator is... i tell her i'm taking the stairs on purpose... might shed some pounds.... her response (translated): "The stairs won't do you much good, madam. You need to stop eating so much."
made me laugh. i tell you, i just love people who speak their minds. even when it's not exactly what i want to hear.
so that's that. we're back to the regular routine beginning tomorrow. really looking forward to getting back into things.
great big summertime kiss!
mary
p.s. i'm seriously considering parting with one of my most treasured possessions for Friday Free Stuff this week -- my JavaOne conference bag (unused, NWT). i'm on a big kick to simplify my life and get rid of stuff. just think, you could be the personal beneficiary of this exercise.
I'm pretty irritated that the equipment on eBay is only available to US residents. All those of us outside the USA are simply prohibited from bidding.
So much for the world wide web. Sun gains a few credibility points by offering stuff on eBay, then promptly loses them by being parochial for no obvious reason.
