BREAKING NEWS - Sun-Sponsored Robotics Team Wins in New Hampshire
_________________________________________________________________
This just in from Noel Poore, Coach of the FIRST Team 1519, Mechanical Mayhem!
Congratulations to the Mechanical Mayhem team for winning the top award at the 2009 Granite State Regional!
Mechanical Mayhem competed at the Granite State Regional in Manchester, NH Thurs-Sat last week, and were surprised and delighted and the end of Saturday to receive the news below. The team will now compete at Championships in Atlanta in April.
What the judges said about this Regional Chairman's team:
"The competition this year for the Granite State Regional Chairman's Award has been absolutely tremendous. One team rose to the top overcoming geographic challenges to exemplify the true meaning of FIRST in the 21st century. Growing from seeds planted in FIRST LEGO League, their mechanical field of dreams flourished into an extremely strong FRC team made of students from across counties. Graduating team members have advanced onto some of the top engineering schools in the country, and their mentorship has led to the growth of new rookie FIRST teams in other states. A recognized regional leader in advancing the FIRST mission, mentoring over 13 successful FIRST LEGO League teams, and in seven off-season tournaments. These disrupters used 21st century communication technology to promote FIRST goals by way of first-class coaching and training videos worldwide. The Granite State Regional Chairman's Award winner for 2009 is Team #1519 Mechanical Mayhem!"
What the announcer David Price said when presenting the award:
"The Regional Chairman's Award was created to keep the central focus of the FIRST Robotics Competition on FIRST's ultimate goal of transforming our culture in ways that will inspire greater respect for science and technology and to encourage more young people to appreciate the real life rewards and career opportunities in those fields. The Regional Chairman's Award honors the team that in the judges' estimation best represents a model for other teams to emulate and which embodies the goals and purposes of FIRST. It is the most prestigious award presented at this regional competition. The winner of this award will be invited to the FIRST Championships this year in Atlanta where it will compete against the winners from all the other regional events for the Chairman's Award.

Cool stuff. My kids participated in this in MA. We made it to state finals at WPI, but not Atlanta. It is an awesome program to engage kids in technology. It was designed to get kids involved and excited about engineering/science/technology as they get about sports.
