All-Ireland Football time this weekend, after the excitement of the hurling where The Rebels managed to retain their crown by defeating The Tribesmen in a closely fought contest, the football final is an equally mouth watering prospect.

Kerry are defending champions, but Tyrone really want this one bad: !!

They plan on giving the gooch cooper a real hard time !!

The Happy Hookers Golf Society had their yearly Captains outing over the weekend. This year it was held in Newbridge Golf Course and it was a glorious day !!

Congratulations to John Devereux on scoring a fantastic 41 pts helped in no small way by his 2 birdie finish, excellent !!

Also congratulations to Colm McDermott who scored a hole in one on the day !!

Another fast paced weekend in the world of GAA !!

Laois vs Armagh, All-Ireland quarter-final, and to be honest a bit of a wash out if you are Laois supporter, the Armagh men were ruthless in their meeting with the O'Moore men, a score of 2-17 to 1-10, really does say it all. Ah well I suppose we always have next year to look forward to....

Sunday saw the second All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final between Kilkenny and Galway, most people thought it was just a formality for Kilkenny to reach their third final in as many years, but the tribesmen had other ideas. They hit the ground running on Sunday so fast I think they still haven't stopped. Kilkenny didn't know what hit them !!, 5-18 to 4-18 being the final score, which is phenomenal ! For any team to score 4-18 at this level and still lose... Something that has not been seen to often before.

Galway will now face Cork in this years final. These teams have met 5 times in the All-Ireland final, 1928, 1929, 1953, 1986, 1990 with the Rebels winning all 5 outings. This should be incentive enough to dethrone the current McCarthy cup holders. Roll on September 11th, to what promises to be a cracking game of the fastest team sport on the planet !!

Well what can I say, what a weekend of GAA !!

Saturday saw the Dubs take on Tyrone in the All-Ireland Football Quarter Final, in Croke Park to a packed stadium of 80,000 screaming fans. And they weren't to be let down either. Probably the best Football game of the year so far was dished out. Some spectacular scoring from both sides but in particularOwen Mulligans goal was just breath taking, leaving two dubs completely flat footed, selling them the same dummy, and then smashing the ball home to the net....

And it all ended with a nerve tingling free from Mossy Quinn to draw the game and send it to a replay... await with baited breath...

On Sunday the hurlers of Cork and Clare decided to provide the best hurling game of the season. The venue again was croke Park, this time 50,000 fans turned out, the stakes was a place in this years all-ireland final. Clare seemd to come out of the blocks running, and really harrassed the cork backs into making mistakes resulting in their 2 point lead at half-time. This they followed up with another 4 unanswered points in the 2nd half to lead by 6 points with 20 minutes to go. But then the Rebels decided to wake, up. Ronan Curran and Brian Corcoran were both sub'd and Gardner was moved into Centre half back, this made all the difference. Suddenly the Rebels got going and provided 5 unanswered points of their very own, Clare were running out of steam. Gerry O'Connor pointed with just minutes to go to take the lead and that was how it was to finish 4 minutes into Injury time with Cork victorious by the narrowest of margins....

I can't wait until the next installments.....

This weekend coming.. my own county is in action, Laois as they take on Armagh in another of the all-Ireland Quarter finals....

On saturday last I managed to play in an Open Singles Competition in the lovely Charleville Golf Course.

A wonderfully mature golf course every hole tightly lined with wonderful mature trees, and I must say the course was in excellent condition, and I even managed to shoot an +10 round of 81, which I was very happy with !

Another sunday of great Hurling was the prospect, and indeed it did not fail to deliver. Tipperary faced up to a highly motivated Galway team to start off the proceedings. This tured out to be a very entertaining match indeed, the first half was poor in general, but the second half was really entertaining.

Tipp had the game really and will be kicking themselves for letting it slip away, they controlled the game from the beginning, and never really let Galway get into it, yet Galway just about hung in there, nipping a few pints here a there, towards the end they were attempting to go for goals in a panic, a miss hit poped the ball over the bar and this was followed by a stream of pints, and a cracking goal near the end which sealed Tipp's fate.

The second game Kilkenny faced Limerick. The cats were the out-and-out favourites to take this tie, most people giving the shannon siders no chance at all, and early in the game when Kilkenny scored 7 unanswered pints it looked like a thrashing was on the cards not too disimmilar to the one the cats gave to Offaly. But Limerick dug deep and managed to score 7 unanswered pints of their own and mid way through the second have there was only a solitary pint between them. But the class of Kilkenny showed in the end when they just upped it another gear and finished the easy winners in the end.

All in all the 4 games from the last two weekends showed that Cork and Kilkenny are still the dominant teams in the country, but there is a light there as they did not seem as invincable as other years. Which gives some hope to the likes of Limerick to fight back next year.

On a closer to home note, Laois managed to stay afloat in the top tier of hurling by defeating Antrim on Saturday evening last. Now if they could only really contest ..... Laois in an All-Ireland Hurling Final, that is one dream that will take a lot to come true... but I live on in hope

The first two Guinness GAA All-Ireland Hurling Quarterfinals were held at the weekend in Croke Park.

Clare battled against a somewhat lack lustre Wexford side in the first match which was a somewhat quiet match. Wexford really did make Clare look like a decent team.

In the second game Cork overcame Waterford, this a much better game was closely fought right to the end until Cork full forward Brian Corcoran netted to end it as a contest. Waterford lead the game from the start and it was late into the second half before Cork managed to catch up and take the lead.

Cork will now meet Clare in the Semi-Final.

In the other Quarter Finals to be held next weekend, Kilkenny are expected to overcome Limerick, but the Tipperary vs Galway clash is really anyones call....

What a weekend, we had our annual Happy Hookers Golfing Society Captains day on saturday at my home golf course in Mountrath, Co. Laois.

Man what day, the rain wow !, I was in the second group out and we just about managed to complete 14 holes before a complete deluge occured and flooded all the greens, resulting in the outing being cancelled.

After some reflection by the HHGS committee, it was decided to re-run the Captains prize in Newbridge on the 20th of August and to push the Presidents prize out to september.
