Innovation and Creativity: are they linked?

There's an intriguing article in Forbes today about a guy named Gordon Knox who tries to pair artists with high-tech companies for short-term projects. He says when brilliant artists meet brilliant engineers, "so many opportunities right in your face are suddenly possible."

That's so interesting - I always use innovation and creativity interchangeably, but I agree with him that by mixing talents together big ideas can form. I saw this great presentation once on creativity and how taking people from different areas of specialization and mixing them together is where the insight comes from. He has a book called creativity and I thought it was really good.

So whats the big deal about this. The article did not seem to say that there was any success. Apple and Aston Martin both design great products seemingly without the help of artists. Or you can call their design teams artists which I would agree with. Just hire a great design team and you should be fine.

Thanks for the book tip Dalton. I should read that one and see if I get any inspirations from it.

Shubho, I would be interested to know how Apple encourages innovation. Who knows, maybe they are injecting artists into the process, either directly or in the form of artistic designers in their design teams.
