My daughter was selected to represent her class

in her school's speech contest here in Beijing. "Just do your best and I'll be so proud of you!" I said.

"Uh uh," she replied. "My teacher said I have to win, otherwise my whole class will lose face."

That's a lot of pressure to put on a 6-year-old, I think!

Get used to schools in Asia :) Look at the bright side, if you can handle this any other school system is a piece of cake :) I wasn't allowed to rank outside the top three of my class for the last 10 years of my school life. Gives you that competitive edge :)

Good luck to her - she would do well

Since she was selected to represent her class in such a competitive environment, I'm sure it's because she IS most qualified to best represent her peers. :-) I agree tho', that's a lot of pressure for a 6 year old. Sending some positive brainwaves...

Ouch. I agree. It's a huge amount of pressure on a 6 year old. I prefer to try to foster self-motivation in my child when it comes to academics. I leave it to the sports teams to promote winning.

Thanks Sue and Skrocki! I always watch Audrey to see if she's showing any signs of 'cracking'. So far she seems to be handling the pressure just fine. I'll keep the blog updated though. :)
