Extreme Makeover: IT Edition

Don't you think it's time? I mean, I feel lucky that where I live (Lafayette, Colorado) has a fairly sophisticated public information technology infrastructure -- the City publishes news on its website and to email subscribers practically every day, I can log in to the library to search for books or to renew books I have on loan, and the mayor reads and responds to email! Citizens are connected.

According to the Rural Policy Research Institute the lack of internet connectivity is a particular problem in Louisiana, West Virginia, and Iowa. Lack of connectivity has implications for education and business, which is why the issue has been tackled by cities around the country, e.g., see Wireless Philadelphia. The problem has been recognized at the global level and lot of people are working on this.

I'm all for global action -- but why not rally to one city at a time and do it right? Ironically, if you're reading this, you probably don't live in a city that has this problem. But if you know of someplace, post it here -- bring in those nominations!
