Jason's VimoMail

What gets started as a long story during a project in CT/MA turns out to be a synopsis of the power of Open Source.

I "borrowed" a co-worker's $200 GPS System to navgiate my way back from from a late dinner back to the hotel.

Even though I was never in the area before, I knew right away that the suggested routes through cornfields and cemeteries would spell this as a 200 smacker waste of money.

That evening I started looking a J2ME Applications for my 2006-era cell phone. Actually I was looking for free J2ME Applications .... and found this site to start.

After getting GPS and Driving Maps enabled on my phone, I decided I also needed a business tool. Email would be great to have, since I spend a lot of time disconnected. However, like most large organizations, Sun uses SSL layers for their IMAP/SMTP transports and an email-forwarding service violates company guidelines.

I found Jason's IMAP client and found that it worked partially. Sent him an email saying "close but no cigar;" and since it did download mail messages, I considered pruchasing it.

That note led to a flurry of e-discussion and it seems that Jason worked all weekend to build the proper SSL components for his small client to work. Props to Jason.

And this is a microcosm of Open Source and Open Standards -- ask for it and it will be there; and all I need to do is to tell everyone where I found it, so that you can find it too.
