what is your PUE index of your datacenter?
If your PUE is over 2, there is some big room for improvement. Your datacenter need a relook or rethought or rearchitecture or rebuild or refresh or all.
You may be wondering what I am talking about - what is PUE to start with?
PUE is a metric becoming very popular - it is a simple and powerful metric of how efficient your datacenter is. It is defined as
- PUE(power utilization efficiency) = (IT equipment power + infrastructure power) / (IT equipment power)
Ideally you want this PUE to be 1 meaning that you use power(electricity) only for IT equipment. In reality, however, you can't help but to use electrity for infrastructure as well
- chiller
- room cooling
- ups
- lighting
- etc
Let me ask you again - what is PUE of your datacenter? if you don't know the answer, please start to measure it. Then how do you interpret it? According to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the PUE is
- over 2 : you do need a remedial action right away
- 1.5 - 2 : reasonably good
- 1.2 : state of the art (you can brag about...)
Any Sun story here? Yes! Sun recently built a "green" datacenter with PUE in our mind. Here we achieved a PUE of 1.28 which is probably one of the most energy efficient datacenter. We're telling you the story in the following video
If you need any help or further discussion where you can hear Sun's full story and experience/expertise in building the most efficient datacenter in the world, please let me know. I will put you thru the right person in Sun or in the industry.
