I was fiddling with Ubuntu Edgy Eft and fired up Automatix2 to get all those goodies. While going through the software categories I noticed this:

Sun's version 1.5 JDK (Most users DONT need this)

HUH what are they saying, most users do not need JDK! How will one run all those applets and java apps ? Well, after a little more scanning through the lists, I noticed this:

Sun's version 1.5 JRE and The Firefox plugin

Ha, well so they intend users to install the JRE only. That's understandable, but why not mention that piece in the JDK entry. Something like "Sun's version 1.5 JDK (Most users only need JRE, NOT this)". Would reduce confusion.

This apart Automatix2 is simply Great. It gets all sorts of stuff from all over the place and performs the most common useful configurations that users would want to have. It will be even better to have such a thing for OpenSolaris/Solaris Express. SolMatix anyone ?

Comments:

The reason it's flagged as not necessary is because there's other "free" builds that are less bulky it suggests instead. IIRC, it was "blackjack" or something along those lines. It's been a while since I played with ubuntu. --tim

To digress a bit, look at the bright side... at least the "Most users don't need this" comment didn't fall on a Xen /UserModeLinux package like "xen-solaris" or equivalent :)

You have to understand that outside of Sun and a few "street corner programmers", Java is looked very much down upon by the hardcore UNIX pros. If you somebody that wants to get something done FAST, SIMPLY and EFFICIENTLY, they'll use anything other than Java. For speed stuff these guys can crank out pretty tight C code. They're not going to use Java, so yes I agree with the distro maintainers, most users *do not need* JDK! (Personal note: the sooner Java dies a quick death, the better.)
