In January a year ago, EMC surprised the IT world with the introduction
of Flash drives. In the Wikibon Peer Insight this Tuesday (2/24/2009)
we heard that EMC had introduced 200GB and 400GB flash drives, and
reduced the price of flash drives relative to disk drives. Other leading
vendors such as HDS, IBM HP and Sun have all introduced flash drives,
and most if not all storage vendors have plans to introduce them in 2009.

Flash drives have two major benefits for reducing storage and IT energy budgets.

   1. The ability to perform hundreds of times more I/O that traditional
disks and replace large numbers of disks that are I/O constrained. This
allows the remaining data that is I/O light to be spread across fewer
high capacity lower speed SATA hard drives. The impact is fewer actuators,
fewer drives and more efficient storage controllers., leading to lower
storage and energy costs.
   2. The ability to increase system throughput by reducing I/O response times.
Flash can have a profound effect for workloads which are elapsed time sensitive.
One EMC customer was able to avoid purchasing 1,000 system Z mainframe MIPS and
software by reducing batch I/O times with flash drives. Others have placed
critical database tables on flash volumes and significantly improved throughput.
By eliminating a large proportion of “Wait for I/O” time, Wikibon estimates that
between 2% and 7% of processor power and energy consumption can be saved.

Eight emerging trends are transforming many markets and businesses.
Executives should learn to shape the outcome rather than just react to
it.

DECEMBER 2007 • James M. Manyika, Roger P. Roberts, and Kara L. Sprague

Technology alone is rarely the key to
unlocking economic value: companies create real wealth when they
combine technology with new ways of doing business. Through our work
and research, we have identified eight technology-enabled trends that
will help shape businesses and the economy in coming years. These
trends fall within three broad areas of business activity: managing
relationships, managing capital and assets, and leveraging information
in new ways.

Sun x64 Server Sets New World Record on VMmark Virtualization Benchmark

Sun also announced that the Sun Fire X4450 server, running VMware
Virtual Infrastructure 3 software, posted the best VMmark score among
all results based on Intel Xeon processor technology. The Sun Fire
X4450 server, equipped with four Intel Xeon X7460 processors with six
processing cores each delivered a VMmark score of 19.47@14 tiles,
demonstrating its capability as a highly scalable virtualization
platform, that in combination with the VMware ESX Server 3.5.0
hypervisor, takes full advantage of Intel Virtualization Technology.
The Sun Fire X4450 server delivered this world record while using up to
60 percent less system memory in only half the physical space of
competitive systems. For more information on Sun's line of x64 systems

Analysts Discuss the Future of IT during Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2008, October 12-16, in Orlando

STAMFORD, Conn.,
October 13,
2008

Global
economic problems are impacting IT budgets, however, the IT industry
will not see the dramatic reductions that were seen during the dot.com
bust, according to Gartner, Inc. At that time, budgets were slashed
from mid double-digit growth to low single-digit growth.

“In a worst case scenario, our research indicates an IT
spending increase of 2.3 percent in 2009, down from our earlier
projection of 5.8 percent,” said Peter Sondergaard, senior vice
president at Gartner and global head of Research. “Developed economies,
especially the United States and Western Europe, will be the worst
affected, but emerging regions will not be immune. Europe will
experience negative growth in 2009, the United States and Japan will be
flat.”
