Backing up with Dar
If you're interested in ways to back up stuff, and haven't tried Dar yet, here's an article on using Dar that I've just published on my personal blog. In short, Dar works very much like Tar, but it's got a built-in feature for slicing up archive files which comes handy when you want to distribute backup files across several media, for example DVDs or hard disks.
Dar is excellent, I don't know why it isn't more widely known. I've been using it for almost a decade now. It has saved me a couple of times already.
The used to be a nice GUI (KDar) but development was dropped many years ago. Would be excellent if I could open Dar archives within my filemanager just like I can tar, gz and zip.
Strongly recommend it. Still use a descendant of "sample1.txt" from http://dar.linux.free.fr/doc/samples/index.html for backups, only enhanced it so I could add it to daily and monthly cron.
