At CEC 2008 in Las Vegas during November 9-14, 2008, I've got a chance to do PoC with colleagues from various countries (Japan, Korea and China). We called our group "Team Asia" and we do the PoC in CMT Workload topic to identify the performance bottleneck on CMT systems. I am honored to be presenting in front of the class on behalf of our group. The presentation went well. We also have a chance to have dinner by the pool of Bally's Las Vegas hotel.

After I sold my old Garmin nuvi 200 with the same price I have purchased, I decided to go for newer model, Garmin nuvi 205W which has wider screen and better user interface. Actually I am also looking at the high-end model like 765T but it seems that I may not able to utilize all features (e.g. TTS, lane advise).

For 205W, Thai language / keyboard is also working especially "QWERTY" style keyboard can be used with Thai because [Shift] key is available. In addition, this model also feature 3D basemap with elevator (altitude), Animated vehicle, Trip log and "Where Am I ?" feature.

Due to the original Garmin Nuvi 200 Thai font is quite thin and small as shown below:

So I simply enlarge the font by removing \Garmin\ExtData\006-D0952-01.bin and rename 006-D0952-04.bin to 006-D0952-01.bin instead. Don't forget to backup the original files. Then after turn off / turn on again, the new font is a lot bigger as shown below. This applied for Nuvi 200 US Version only.

It was almost ten years ago I started learning photography. I started with Canon EOS cameras with several lens and flashes. Below are list of equipments I used to own:

  • Canon EOS 50E QD Body
  • Canon EOS 500 Body
  • Canon EOS 300D Body
  • Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-4.5  (2 sets)
  • Canon EF 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 USM
  • Canon EF 28-105 f/3.5-3.4 USM
  • Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM
  • Canon EF 50 f/1.8 II
  • Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX HSM
  • Tamron SP90 f/2.8
  • Tamron SP20-40 f/2.7-3.5
  • Tamron AF28-200 f/3.5-6.3
  • Canon 380 EX Flash
  • Canon 550 EX Flash
  • Tripod SLIK 300DX
  • Tube EF25
  • Teleplus Teleconverter 2x
  • Canon Remote RC-1

After I gained some experiences I decided to sell them all and stop shooting D-SLR for almost 2 years. I tried to back to basic by using Canon IXY 900 IS for my photography instead. I find that it is more convenient although we cannot rely on the quality of the pictures taken. It also can record video as well which no D-SLR can do that.

Then just last month, after I studied benefits / differences of various camera brands for a few months, I decided to buy new D-SLR. However, at the first place, I considered Olympus E-510 with Zuiko 14-42 f/3.5-4.5 and Zuiko 40-150 f/4-5.6 as a first choice. But it seems that I don't like it when shooting. The shutter sounds does not impressed me and the view finder is too small. Then I tried Nikon D80, the grip fits my hands perfectly but it seems to be obsoleted very soon so I skipped it. I also tried Canon EOS 40D, it seems to be the best choice, until I shoot pictures and found out that image contrast does not satisfy me. In addition, the quality of image does not different much from my ex-Canon EOS 300D. Can you believe this?

Finally I decided to go for Nikon D60 with AF-S 18-55 f/3.5-4.5G VR, AF-S 55-200 f/4.5-5.6G VR and Nikon SB-600 flash. I found that the camera is too small but that's is acceptable. I tried not to spend much money on this anymore. Why? Finally, we have to process images using image processing tools such as Photoshop or Lightroom anyway.

What I like in D60 are shutter sound, image contrast, bright view finder, shooting feelings and user interface.

What I don't like in D60 (actually Nikon) are autofocus and noise (Canon is quite better).

I think I will stick with Nikon for a while then I will move to Olympus!

After I bought GPS Garmin NUVI 200 (US Version) from US several months ago, using with Thailand Street Maps v8.0, I cannot search [Points of Interest] in Thai, although I modify the device configuration to use Thai keyboard. But just today, I upgraded the firmware to version 4.40 including necessary configuration files (.gtt) from Garmin website using WebUpdater. I found that my Garmin can now search in Thai without any problem. That was great!!!

A few days ago, I got a chance to dine at 'Rengaya', one of the best Korean / Japanese BBQ restaurant in Bangkok. It is located at the heart of Bangkok, Silom Road. The favorite menu here is "HARAMI", serving with fried rice is recommended. This combination is so delicious (and also expensive).

The restaurant is quite crowded after 7pm. So make a prior reservation is recommended. The official address are:

RENGAYA restaurant, Thaniya Plaza, 2nd floor, Silom Road, Bangrak, Bangkok, Thailand

Telephone: +66 2231 2140

Thaniya Plaza is also the largest 'Golf' shopping center in Bangkok for brand new and used

Sunday Aug 10, 2008

In a peaceful morning, I grab my old Fender Standard Stratocaster-style electric guitar and trying to play 'Zombie' from 'The Cranberries'. I found out that there was an 'hummmm' noise that annoying me a lot. So I tried to fix it by finding where any ground could loose.

I started to check input jack but it seems not to be the problem, then I opened the back of the guitar body, I found that the ground is loose so I weld it. After that I tried to play again by plugging my guitar to my MacBook using GarageBand for guitar effects. It worked!!! The 'hummmm' noise is gone. Now I resume playing my guitar.

I got an interesting question from my colleague, "Dude! how many keys on Sun's standard keyboard?". I said "I don't know, although I used it almost everyday but never count it", Then I started counting...

...a few minutes passed...

...total number of keys is "119". Then I called him back for the answer.
