It was almost ten years ago I started learning photography. I started with Canon EOS cameras with several lens and flashes. Below are list of equipments I used to own:
- Canon EOS 50E QD Body
- Canon EOS 500 Body
- Canon EOS 300D Body
- Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-4.5 (2 sets)
- Canon EF 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 USM
- Canon EF 28-105 f/3.5-3.4 USM
- Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM
- Canon EF 50 f/1.8 II
- Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX HSM
- Tamron SP90 f/2.8
- Tamron SP20-40 f/2.7-3.5
- Tamron AF28-200 f/3.5-6.3
- Canon 380 EX Flash
- Canon 550 EX Flash
- Tripod SLIK 300DX
- Tube EF25
- Teleplus Teleconverter 2x
- Canon Remote RC-1
After I gained some experiences I decided to sell them all and stop shooting D-SLR for almost 2 years. I tried to back to basic by using Canon IXY 900 IS for my photography instead. I find that it is more convenient although we cannot rely on the quality of the pictures taken. It also can record video as well which no D-SLR can do that.
Then just last month, after I studied benefits / differences of various camera brands for a few months, I decided to buy new D-SLR. However, at the first place, I considered Olympus E-510 with Zuiko 14-42 f/3.5-4.5 and Zuiko 40-150 f/4-5.6 as a first choice. But it seems that I don't like it when shooting. The shutter sounds does not impressed me and the view finder is too small. Then I tried Nikon D80, the grip fits my hands perfectly but it seems to be obsoleted very soon so I skipped it. I also tried Canon EOS 40D, it seems to be the best choice, until I shoot pictures and found out that image contrast does not satisfy me. In addition, the quality of image does not different much from my ex-Canon EOS 300D. Can you believe this?
Finally I decided to go for Nikon D60 with AF-S 18-55 f/3.5-4.5G VR, AF-S 55-200 f/4.5-5.6G VR and Nikon SB-600 flash. I found that the camera is too small but that's is acceptable. I tried not to spend much money on this anymore. Why? Finally, we have to process images using image processing tools such as Photoshop or Lightroom anyway.
What I like in D60 are shutter sound, image contrast, bright view finder, shooting feelings and user interface.
What I don't like in D60 (actually Nikon) are autofocus and noise (Canon is quite better).
I think I will stick with Nikon for a while then I will move to Olympus!
