Sun Portal will beat Liferay, eXo and JBoss

Wait .. I didn't say it. This blogger did :-)

But I think he is absolutely right. Stability, scalability, support etc have always been our strong points. And these features seem to be lacking in the open source portal arena.

What we are trying to do today is to combine the advantages of open source with the security and stability of commercial software. So watch out Liferay, eXo and JBoss ;-)

Comments:

This is really insulting to, not only myself (JBoss Portal), but also to Liferay, eXo, and anyone who works on OSS. You cite some dellusional poster that has retarded views of OS software as a basis for your argument? You're going to have to make more sense in your posts for your little portal to be relevant. Remember also, JBoss paved the road you are walking down now. Scalability, stability, and support is what we built on to the OS AS, and we mimic in our portal offering. STAY METAL! Roy Russo

Geez I used to consider JBoss portal an option but I see now the "values" behind it must be based in fear. No matter how good a business model, acting like that will easily disqualify anyone from future consideration in my opinion.

My "values" are based on defending our business model and project from FUD attacks by competitors. And yes, Nav's post and the post he linked to is pure FUD. If thats how you base your "decisions", have a nice day. ;-)

Thanks for the initial post and link - I am also eagerly awaiting the release of the Sun Portal source. Roy, grow up! There are many good reasons to NOT be excited about JBoss portal. First, it only runs on your own app server and, contrary to what JBoss corp thinks, that is NOT a good thing. Many people in the real world need to deploy on different app servers (in my world it's BEA all the way). Second, many people consider the company as well as the product in their purchasing decisions. The belligerent and evangelical posts from JBoss employees do little to advance the company's image. Third, JBoss portal is -not- know for scalability nor performance. Yes, it's getting better, especially with the company's move to buying quality plumbing, but it's not there yet. If it is, start publishing some benchmarks to prove it (SPECjbb2005).

Was kind of dumb of me to get in to this fight and watch all the JBoss haters crawl out of the woodwork like little roaches. How about we agree to let the market decide? Lets revisit marketshare for portal servers in a year, and see where we stand. Once I hand the Sun Portal Team their asses on a platter, then you can all chant "roy was right!". Thanks for playing. byebye.

Actually Roy no matter what "we" decide the market will do exactly that for us. I'm sure you didn't help yourself and JBoss with this little outburst. Look for a future post on my blog on how open source projects self destruct and kill their own market share because of their arrogance, attitude, and elitist principles (high barriers to entry).

I believe that more than the existing open source portals, it is commercial portals that are going to be affected. Especially eXo and Liferay operate in a different space than the Sun Java Enterprise Portal. I should say that watch our IBM, BEA and Oracle :-) -- Punit Pandey http://portlets.blogspot.com

Hey Roy,

I didn't mean to insult anyone. I was just pointing to an opinion floating around and this one especially because it had a direct link to my post.

If you think it was insulting, I apologize. I do have a great deal of respect for JBoss and it's products and I don't think one person's opinion can change that. I think the same is true for the other OSS portal vendors too.

Please take my remarks in lighter vein. Sorry once again !
