HTML tag bar

Posted by Petr Pisl on Dec 12 2008, 10:15:07 AM CET

Todays feature is not PHP specific. It works in all files that contain HTML tags. If you open a HTML, PHP or other file in editor, then there is new top bar. The bar displays HTML tag path from root tag to tag where the current caret position is. You probably know this from other HTML editors.

If you click on a tag in the bar, then it navigates to the place, where the tag starts.

Great .... very useful feature ..

how can I use this feature ? Can I use the update feature on Netbeans PHP or I have to download the new version ?

Petr is probably tired to answer this question :-) All these tasty features take place in the development trunk and are available, say, here:

Cool feature...

Would be great if this one is available for XML editing as well (any tag based editing for that matter).

Posted by Rohan Ranade on December 12, 2008 at 10:08 PM CET #

To Permana: As Andrew wrote, you have to download a development build or probably this week should be available milestone 1 of NetBeans 7.0.

To Andrew: I'm not tired :) But I have to split my time among this blog, mailing list, creating features, learning new things, fixing and other things like family:)

To Rohan: You are right. Could you please file an enhancement for the XML editor.

Sweet feature! Now here's another idea.

How about adding and html tool bar with buttons like
"bold", "underline", "unordered list", etc? This toolbar would be used to easily add html tags to the current document. For example, A developer selected the words "NetBeans IDE" and then click on the "bold" form the toolbar to have the tags "<strong>" wrapped around the selected words.

What do you think?

Hi Petr:

1. These little tid bits are excellent. Are these features getting propagated to the core IDE ? It be nice to have them for other type of project like Java or Ruby , etc.

2. I know you the engineers working on product are supper busy. Is there a way for us the user of NetBeans to be able to contribute? The more people are involved the more NetBeans becomes popular.

3. It would be great if other engineers working on lets say Java or Rubys blog pages keep the same format as you, ie. a link at the bottom of their respective pages saying "blogs" and then have these little helpers on the left side. Frankly it brings me back here every day and gets me more involved in the learning process.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Toma,

ad 1: I agree. The html tag bar is feature from html editor. So it should be available in jsp, ruby and html as well.

ad 2: Yes, everybody can contribute and it's welcome. There are some rules to get write rights into the repository, but it's not hard. NetBeans are composed from modules, so you can create you own module(plugin) and contribute in this way. If the plugin has appropriate quality, then it's added in standard distribution or on the stable update center.

ad 3. Thanks. Working on a blog is not mandatory:) It's voluntary and I spend a few hours of my spare time a day with this blog.

Thanks,
Petr

This sort of regular communication from developers of a product to the community at large is what makes the difference. It shows you care. That is a rare commodity these days. Kudos to you. If there is anything we can do to promote your efforts with your management team let us know.

Kudos again.

Is there a possibility to turn it off? I can't find, but probably it should exist, as for other toolbars.

To Toma: Thanks. These kind of feedbacks is always a motivation:).

To Mikhail: No there is not the possibility yet. Please, file new issue against html editor.

Regards,
Petr

This feature can apply html and xml file.
Some other functionality can be improved.
Provide a dropdown list on the tag for listing the sub tags, this can replace the current XSD schema file editor in "Column" view.
