虚拟磁带库概念

虚拟磁带库-Virtual Tape Library(VTL)系统使用磁盘阵列硬件设备,软件上实现磁带库的备份功能.管理员可将之当作磁带库进行管理.

由于使用磁盘介质,虚拟磁带库的备份和恢复速率可高达1000MB/S,通过使用将近1000个SATA硬盘,在容量方面也以TB量级直逼磁带.同时,在可用性及可靠性方面也比传统磁带库有量级的提高.

SUN目前推出的虚拟磁带库有StorageTek VTL Appliance Plus Series 1000,2000,3000这么几款,拿3000系列来说,其可用容量为6TB到170TB,传输速率为1400MB/S,最多使用448个SATA硬盘,可模拟高达128个磁带库,1024个磁带驱动器及8192个虚拟磁带.当然,价格也是十分高昂,最高可达87万美元.

为什么要用虚拟磁带库而不直接用磁盘？是因为软件管理简单吗？

VTL presents the same software interface as regular TL does. So whatever backup software you use on a regular TL, you can use that on VTL as well.

VTL is better than TL in terms of performance and speed. VTL could serve as a tier 2/3 storage solution. Also normally VTL uses SATA drives which keep the costs down. (as compared to scsi disks).
