Go Green, Stay Home

I was thinking about how I am doing my part to save the environment by working from home.

  • I drive less, on average, 60 miles a week. That includes picking up my kid from day care and all weekly errands.
  • I use less electricity. I prefer ceiling fans to air conditioning and another layer to cranking up the heat.
  • I create less garbage as I don't use disposable plates or utensils for lunch.
  • I use less water, as I only shower when my family, and, sometimes, neighbors complain.

Even though I don't drive a Prius (is it possible to cram a 3 year old and all her crap into one, anyway?). I am doing my part.

Bring your kid to the home office

I was just thinking. How does "Bring your kid to work day" work if you WFH? We get up in the morning, maybe brush our teeth before sitting in front of the computer. Check the email and do some work. Get up an hour or two later to have some breakfast. Sit back down. Realize it's 2 o'clock and am hungry and haven't showered yet. Deal with the hunger first. Then sit down again. Realize that it's 4:30 and should really take a shower or at least get out of my pajamas before heading to pick up the kid. Do the smell test. Yep. Take a shower and go pick up the kid.

I think I need to work on this routine before "Bring your kid to work day" is relevant.

    Office Ambience for WFHer

You can tell that a lot of people are working form home based on the products created to serve them. Enter "Thriving Office". They make an audio track that provides an illusion of a thriving office. You can play this during conference calls to mask the squealing baby and barking dog endemic to WFHers. Or you could put yourselves on mute.

    Extrovert and WFH

I was reading an entry on Scott Jolly's blog about the personality types that do well WFH. I am not sure where I fall.

I love talking to people, bouncing off ideas and such. Definitely an extrovert per Myers-Briggs. But when I am in the office, I don't troll the halls and do the lunch thing. I get a lot more done at home because my only distraction is laundry. Whereas at work, it's anyone who pops their head in my office or whom I run into at the printers.

So I don't know. I considered finding a job where I could work in an office with people. But I'm not sure I would be happy with the decrease in flexibility. I guess I will continue to keep my interaction with coworkers largely on the phone. I mean I would do that anyway in the office, my team being geographically dispersed. At least at home I can work in my pajamas and have a 10 second commute.

Review - Plantronics head set and amplifier

I finally got the headset and amplifier I ordered. The new amplifier would not work, so I plugged my headset into the old amplifier. Works great now, except that I have to be careful where the microphone is directed. Too low and my voice fades in and out. Too high and I get feedback from the earpiece.

Plantronics - panacea to my headset problems?

I was in the local field office and one of the service guys there was nice enough to give me an extra Plantronics amplifier and headset that was lying around. I have been trying to use it for the last week, but a) the headset bugs me and b) no one can hear me on the the other end. I was going to get the headset that just wraps around your ear anyway, so I broke down and bought both the headset and amplifier in case the issue with volume is the amplifier. I just got it through eBay today, so haven't tested it yet. Stay tuned.

    Caught again

I have been caught again with no pants on. I work from home and there is a direct view from my front door to my office door. Normally, this is not an issue, but there are two tall panes of glass on either side of the door and I don't always remember to put on pants in the morning.

The doorbell just rang. I have no pants in my office and can't sneak out to get a pair on before answering the door. I get on the floor and sneak a look around my desk to see who it is. Some guy. Thank god for Feng Shui otherwise my desk would be in direct view from the door and he would be able to see I was home, in my skivvies. I will have to wait him out. Feels like the one Halloween I forgot to buy candy and had to hide in the dark pretending not to be home while little ghouls and goblins banged on my door.

    Headset - Hoping # 3's the charm

Ok, I am on my third phone and second headset over the last year. The current headset, something by Plantronics that is meant for my cell and landline really blows. If you twist it just right (or wrong depending on your point of view) the earpiece emits this high pitched, piercing noise that not only I can hear, but so can everyone on the call. Needless to say, during conference calls, I hold wery...wery...still.

I am on the hunt, once again, for another headset. I have been looking at the ones that call centers use. When I worked at BofA as a customer service rep eons ago, I seem to recall them working well. Now I just have to decide whether there is justification for buying one of the new wireless ones. I always think I need a wireless. But to be honest, I plant, and I do mean, root, my backside into my chair and don't move for hours. For those moments when I do get up to go to the bathroom, I think anyone else who calls would prefer to leave a message.

At least I am fairly happy with my phone. It's a Polycom meant for an office. The full-duplex speaker works great. The funny thing is that the handset leaves something to be desired. Didn't think that quality could go down there.
