More Languages at the ATM

ATM language selection When getting cash this week, I noticed that the ATM had learned two new languages: Korean and Vietnamese. That’s in addition to the four it had already mastered earlier – English, Spanish, traditional Chinese, and Hmong. Wells Fargo is one of a growing number of American companies that have realized that multilingual software isn’t just required for their global success, but that it’s also good for business at home. Their press release provides some background; the US Census Bureau report “Language Use and English-Speaking Ability: 2000” has more.

I've always wondered why at an ATM of all places, I should need to be ASKED what my language of choice is... It's already got the mother-of-all-single-signons, and my secured token (my card)... why doesn't my account include both my net worth and a note that says "speaks english"? If I spoke Korean, and it dropped me right into that, it'd probably be an ok security measure against those who didn't, too, huh? Along those lines, I've always thought that loud bells and sirens should automatically go off if someone claiming to be me signs the credit card slip not using his left hand (i'm a southpaw).
