Update Manager
I was pleasantly surprised to see a new icon on my top panel today - the update notifier 
.
Clicking on it opened the Update Manager, which you can also access from the System > Administration menu:
Selecting Update All notified me that a new Boot Environment was going to be created. This is great as I don't have to worry about these updates somehow harming my system.
The update took a couple of minutes to complete:
After which I rebooted. There was a new opensolaris-1 grub menu item, which was the default. I'm now up to date.
Excellent. Is the old boot environment just a ZFS snapshot? Any way to delete it later? I will want to clear out the boot menu after a while.
I thought Sun charged for Solaris updates? What's the difference between these updates and the subscription updates?

Hallo!
I have updated my 2008-05 Open-Solaris-Installation to the latest Build (101b), which must be the same as the second Release Candidate and - I think also - as the Release of Open-Solaris 2008-11.
If I start the Update-Manager, I do not get the message, that there are new updates available.
Do I have to update my repository-url first? My current url is: - according to the output of pkg authority: - http://pkg.opensolaris.org/
Here is the full output of the command pkg authority:
SolUser@opensolaris:~$ pkg authority
AUTHORITY URL
Blastwave http://blastwave.network.com:10000/
Sunfreeware http://pkg.sunfreeware.com:9000/
opensolaris.org (preferred) http://pkg.opensolaris.org/
Is my assumption, that an updated 2008-05 Open-Solaris installation is equal to a new fresh installation of 2008-11, correct?

One can manage the boot environments using the package manager.File->boot environment should get you there.

I was *unpleasantly* surprised. Why isn't this just a 'simple mode' of the existing package manager, rather than having a whole different application for it?

The update notifier is not just for the base installation of OpenSolaris, but also for any packages you have installed. In my case, I believe the update was to the amp-dev (Sun Web Stack) package.
And yes, I believe an updated OpenSolaris 2008.05 is equivalent to a new fresh installation of 2008.11.

Seb we are using the same API's underneath, it just gave us more freedom to have a lightweight app to handle the Updates.
We did look at a simple mode variant for the PM but the underlying data model needs to include a lot more than what's required for UM and there was no simple way to change this in PM, without introducing a lot of unecessary complexity. Goal keep things simple and maintainable.
