Bill Vass, president and COO of SunFed, had a great blog entry on how
the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) and 20 organizations have been collaborating to create a secure and
interoperable health information infrastructure that will connect
providers, consumers and other parties that support the healthcare
system in the US. Their ultimate goal is to provide improved access to
quality
healthcare at a lower cost. You can read more about it here: http://blogs.sun.com/BVass/
Sun's entire open source middleware stack was used in this project as
its foundation, including:

The goal: To show how electronic patient records can be
shared
across key government agencies seamlessly and securely and more
importantly, to successfully demonstrate how the healthcare industry
can be transformed by enabling access to patient history, medications,
tests and previous medical procedures.
Early Adopter: The Social Security Administration announced last month that beginning in early 2009, they will start
receiving medical records for some disability applicants electronically
through the NHIN gateway. The Social Security Administration is the
first government agency to utilize the NHIN gateway.
Partners: As a part of the NHIN project, strategic healthcare
partners are developing services using Sun's open source development
tools and contributing code back to open source communities, making
them available to other companies and government agencies. Check out
the links provided above for more information!
