Happy New Year
Today is the first working day of year 2008. I did some documentation work about the past year and the new year, it somehow likes a little student doing homework assigned by teacher. But, it is my habit at the beginning of a new year to look into myself, and ask myself what I did right or what I did wrong in the past year, and at the same time to make a to-do list for the new year.Do not want to list all of those items here, for some of them might be stupid to others. Of cause, how do I know that?...anyway, I believe it's a good chance for me to look myself clearly, maybe not that clearly as I wished...Among those action items, one possibly most important new year objective is to "be stronger, mentally and physically". I need to do lot of work to make it true.

Solaris Packages
What does Indiana project mean? ... Means, more and more packages will be put into repository. Some packages are useful, obviously, they have fancy interfaces and interesting functionalities, and some have good reputation and respectable authors and users. Sooner or later, they need be supported, and easily be downloaded, so as to attract real end-users, as well as application developers. No doubt about the importance. The question is about the process. Lucky thing is we will see it soon, and OpenSolaris will be better and better.

TM: project #4 "My Nightmare"
It's an easy topic, I just did it two weeks' ago. It seems, audiences didn't enjoy such topic that much, probably I need to choose some serious ones next time. Another reason might be as same as the evaluation I got, audiences always expect a clear point from the speech. Obviously, I need to emphasize the last paragraph more, even from the beginning. - BTW, I don't have any dream recently.Subject: My Nightmare
-
This is my project #4, assignment is to choose right words which should be colorful enough so that audience can "see" them in their minds.
Today, I choose a nightmare that I got 15 years ago, when I was a middle school student. This dream is a little long, but dramatic. It is about eternal friendship and death. In my dream, I can live forever and look young always.
Dear toastmasters, please take a deep breath, I don't want you be scared out of your wits. Story is coming ...
-
The 1st 100 years, I was very excited and enjoy such capability at the beginning, but gradually I realized it was actually miserable, because all my family and friends eventually left me. Nothing hurts like the truth. I had to make new friends and suffered the pain again. I was always waiting for the heart broken moment of separating with my friends. This just like my destiny. To change it, I suddenly became a scientist who had magic power to create a medicine which can bring died people to life again. That means my friends can live as long as I want. But, every coin has two sides, what bothered me was the way of a successful reincarnation. That was, I must kill them on my own firstly, and then put the medicine into their bodies. Then, they can live another 20 years, and never knew what happened.
- You may already notice it is quite similar like a vampire story. But, I did not know it until 2 years later after my dream, I saw similar story of a little vampire girl never grow up occurred in a movie "Interview with the Vampire", starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pit.
Continue... It's not the end of my dream.
The 2nd 100 years were fleeting, just like a summer breeze. During that, I got used to the pain of killing my friends and the happiness of bringing them to life, which happened in turn. Everything was going on peacefully, until one day. A friend noticed some indications, he came to me and asked the truth. I still remembered he told me that "you can not deprive my right to die", as if it is a thunder, I didn't know how to explain at all. Then, my friend left me, absolutely disappeared from my life forever, just like never ever have been there before. I didn't know where he was, and had no news, but I definitely knew his ending.
Again, the 3rd 100 years passed, not as quickly as people think it would be. I was still alive, young, fully of energy, even more intelligent than everyone around me, but those wonderful things made me sad, I started to hate myself. An ordinary morning, I waked up - of course in my dream, and saw sunlight through the window like waterfall, dust were dancing, life was so beautiful, but I was yet alive, like a zombie, then, I couldn't help crying, loudly.
Then, "the end" - I waked up, really waked up.
ZhouGong Jie Meng said:
. A friend died in your dream, means he can live as long as he can.
. Reincarnation means problem can be solved, and you will be successful in health, wealth, and life.
Sounds pretty good result. Well, the “Interpretation of Dreams” said:
. Death and reincarnation: means the end of a kind of relationship, or fading away of some internal characteristics - which might be something you don't like or can't put up with, you want to change them and therefore have such a dream.
Yes, they are different. But the same thing is, both of them could not light my road of better understanding what this dream really means. I was not indulging in it, and I was not superstitious, I was just wondering why I had such dream, and how my daily life reflects in dream. A nightmare or a good dream can't change my mood.
Dear toastmasters, you can see that I am such kind of person who can remember all the details of a dream, which I am particularly proud of. So, I made a note book called "my dreams" – of cause, it is not about the better life people pursued, it is about the real reflections of brain activities. Some of them are good, positive, colorful and funny stories, and some are black, horrible and stupid ones. But, the common point is they are relatively integral, almost all of them have beginning, climax, and ending.
Occasionally, I thought I should have sold them to movie producer. But, more frequently, I thought those dreams were trying tell me something.
So, about this one, what I learned is: <...pause...> To many people, to keep young and be immortalized might be their aspirations, but actually, they don't equal to happiness. Because the most pain a human can feel is separation from love - Loneliness is probably worse than death.

TM: project #3 "Beijing Olympic Game 2008 - who wins"
The 3rd project I did is at August, 2007. Sometimes, I just feel what we need to practise might be you can say something anyway, no matter what it is.Subject: Beijing Olympic Game 2008 - who wins
-
Yesterday is August 8th, next year, the same day, Beijing 2008 Olympic Game is opened. People from all of the world will see what the opening ceremony looks like, whether or not Chinese have imagination and creation, whether or not the process is well organized, whether or not foreigners can easily find where they want to see or what they want to eat without tourists guides.
July 13th 2001, Beijing city was immersed in a festival atmosphere, and the whole world knew this city won the bid for 2008 Olympic Game. Since then, Chinese government and Beijing citizens put huge enthusiasm on it. - I remember our first toastmaster table topic is about Olympics too. A lot of things gradually changed after that. It's not a game for a single city any more, it becomes a game hosted by the whole country.
CNN said, "Beijing Olympics Puts China Under Microscope of World Media", well, we can also say that "Everyone is looking for the opportunity via this microscope".
But, question is who is going to win? Can ordinary people get benefits from it? Let's analyze it from several aspects:
The first thing I want to mention is real estate:
. As the Beijing citizens, we can take advantage of the new architectures left by Olympic Game the whole city is rebuilt. As well as, government can partly solve unemployment pressure through the working opportunities of building and maintaining.
But, story has another side. With the unbelievable development of real estate in Beijing, which is one result of hot Olympics economy, house price goes higher and higher. Even the large international company employees, like us, think the price is too high to afford. It's not difficult to image how a blue-collar worker buy their own apartments?
The 2nd thing I wan to analyze is China's image and foreigner's expectation:
. We may expect that after Olympic Game, China's image to western countries may change, because more people can speak English, and their communication capabilities improve a lot. To accomplish this, many people are learning English. For example, seldom, you can meet a taxi driver who is listening "international music radio" not "jiaotong radio".
But, I doubt how it really works in such short time, because change China's image is not an easy and straight-forwarding work, which is related to many aspects. If things can be easily revised by some volunteers, I believe the situation will be back to the original point shortly after that.
Finally, let's see another big headache - traffic:
. During the game, government will release some policies to ensure traffic is good. Such as, only cars with end number 1,3,5,7,9 can be on road each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Another half cars can be on road the other half of week. - We already experienced this strategy during many large programs and activities.
But, can it solves the root cause? Encourage people to follow traffic rule might be more reasonable. Now, many programs on TV and radio talk about this, such as - you represent Beijing, be nice to foreigners, and follow traffic rules. - I can't totally agree with such strategy and tone, because as a person, your behavior represents yourself firstly.
If the marketing promotion strategy can not clearly explain "self-realization" concept, maybe, we can set up a "good image" during the game, but can it take long?
Till now, you may notice each aspects we analyze is ended up with a “question mark”. So, to answer the questions we asked at the beginning, “Who is going to win?” “Can ordinary people get benefits from it?” I have to say - I do not know.
I'm not negative person, and am not blaming all social problems to Olympic Game, and definitely don't boycott Beijing Olympic game. Actually, as a Beijing citizen, I'd like to see it will be as successful as the official web-site announced.
Today, my speech is to raise a question, and list several problems which might be or might not be related to Beijing Olympics, and hope government can solve them, and pay more attention to people's life, environment, healthy economy, and better traffic condition. Dear Mr. and Ms. Toastmasters, the key point is: Not Only During the Olympic Game. After all, this game is only a mile stone but not the final goal of a more harmonious and easier life.

iwi with wpa support
Eventually, this Intel 802.11b/g driver, iwi(7D) wpa support is integrated today to catch up this build. After three hours stress testing(6 sessions, 16bit small packet) and three hours corruption testing separately on WEP128bit and WPA encryption, I got a success test result. It might be a question worth thinking of whether a long time stress testing is necessary, while corruption testing seems more reasonable for WiFi case, especially given the wireless environments and the ways people use it.
To use WPA encryption, it's quite simple by dladm configuration tool, just follow:
#dladm scan-wifi
#dladm create-secobj -c wpa wpakey
#dladm connect-wifi -e essid -k wpakey
Then, the left thing is as same as a normal nic driver, DHCP or static IP address, you will have a more strong security WiFi connection now. If it doesn't work, probably because it only supports TKIP algorithm right now. Please check AP, whether it is set to AES-CCM algorithm, if so, need wait a while, but not that long. Bug has been filed, and fix is believed to be integrated soon.Posted by paintingsky [driver] ( November 15, 2007 07:06 PM ) Permalink
TM: project #2 "Baby Boom - Opportunity and Challenge"
Here is the 2nd speech that I did the 1st week of June. This year is symbolized by "pig" in Chinese lunar calender. For more background information, there are lots from Google. A quick search, please check here.Subject: Baby Boom - Opportunity and Challenge
-
Today, my speech topic is about baby boom. I got this idea because I read three "congratulation" e-mails after labor holiday, and days later, I read one more. Maybe all of you noticed that suddenly, like magic, everyone is promoted to be a mom or a dad this year - "pig" year. So, sounds like it's what we called "baby boom".
So, today, my speech subject is "Baby boom – Opportunity and Challenge"
Let's see the positive argument firstly - It's an Opportunity:
. Because baby born in pig year will have "Bright future" and "happy life". - new father and mothers would like to hear this.
Chinese think people born in "Pig" year are steady and resolute in doing things, and honest and warm-hearted to other people. They are always faithful to friends and set a high value on friendship. They have many good characteristics, like generosity, kindness, honesty, passion, and enthusiasm and patience for their work. People easily believe that baby born in "Pig" year will have bright future, and can archive their goals. It's not that difficult for me to understand why people have such perspective. On obvious reason might be pig's looks and habit.
We don't regard it as superstition, but look it as culture.
. Another positive argument: "baby boom" is an opportunity to some businesses, such as baby products, diaper, milk powder, toy, clothe, and various types of services, such as children's art photo studio, and so on. Furthermore, you may notice that there are some new businesses this year, very strange businesses, such as:
. A web-site requests 10 thousands RMB to help new parents to choose a good name for their baby;
. Another example: someone registered many web-site names which are related to mom and baby, then he sales those web-site names to the ones who really want to have related business on line. Guess what, that web-site name seller got 10 thousands RMB each month.
Then, let's see it from the other angle - it's a Challenge:
Competition will be obvious, considering that 20% more children will be given birth than a usual year. - which is statistic data reported by CCTV.
. First thing is Hospital. You may remember, early this year, the Sino-Japanese Hospital's obstetric (OB) department announced outpatient services were closed since they couldn't offer extra beds to new petits, the public became highly concerned about how Beijing hospitals would handle this year's baby-boom. Although Beijing Health Bureau held a press release and forbade public hospitals like the Sino-Japanese to close OB outpatient services without direct approval from authorities. The health bureau also asked the public not to worry about the issue, because there were still more than 800 maternity beds. -- But, we understand that it's really difficult for the pregnant woman to see a doctor.
. Then, there will be the competition in education and on the job market.
As you know, in China, especially large city, children are fighting for a better education and better environment. Their parents also spend extra efforts and money to make this happen. It's not difficult to imagine, with 20% more competitors, what will those little children's childhood be? They will have no childhood.
Then, after 16 years education, it's difficult to find a job again for same reasons and same group of people.
. Even longer team impact on those born during the peak period, is the ageing society. With the improved health care system, people can live longer. That means, with the boom of population, tens years later, more than 40% of population will be retired people who need to get the fiscal and financial support from government, which is a reality and problem we will have to face.
In conclusion, let me summarize what I said today. Baby boom, it's a social issue. It's an opportunity and challenge at the same time. Parents are happy to see a competition in the market - for they can get what they want at more reasonable prices, but they might be worry about their children's education and employment in the future.

another new wifi driver: Intel wireless 4965
In the past one year, our team integrated many wireless native drivers - that obviously changed Solaris WiFi support a lot. Here is the list: ath, pcwl, pcan, ipw, iwi, ral, rtw, wpi. Meanwhile, all of our work can also be found on OpenSolaris laptop community. If users don't know which driver they should use, the compatible list may also help.Today, I worked on the case of "Intel wireless 4965agn chip support". This time, it's iwk(7D). Stay turn, it will be integrated soon. If you can't wait, you can also find it here on OpenSolaris.

TM: project #1 "How a cave woman survives without a cell phone"
Early of this year, I joined ToastMaster club in ERI, which is a well organized club. I planed to work on one project every 3-4 months. Below is the first one I did Jan. 2007. Normally, project #1 is used to do some self introduction, it might be proper to put it here too.Subject: How a Cave Woman Survives Without a Cell Phone
-
Today, I would like to share with you some personal stories about how a cave woman survives in a modern society, without cell phone. I choose this topic is because I was asked the same questions several times in the past three months, when ERI tried to set up an emergent phone tree, and when Paul asked me how to send short message. I still remember their responses and their faces when I told them "sorry, I don't have a cell phone". So, I think this topic might be interesting to most of you. Hope you like it.
First of all, the reason I don't have a cell phone has nothing to do with my ability to buy. Do you want to know the beginning of the story? OK, let's go back 10 years. You may remember, almost everybody had a B.B call at that time, and it was very popular to send special numbers that present special meanings. That game was so popular that I thought it changed the real meanings of some important things. As the result, I refused to use B.B call. Then, 7 years ago, when I graduated from school, all my classmates bet with me, that I had to have a cell phone. I, then, said NO to everybody. Now, see me, I guess I won. From then on, whenever I meet my classmates, they will use same question as opening "don't you have a cell phone yet?".
No, from then on, I started the life without cell phone.
Then, is there any disadvantage?
Let me tell you a wallet story. Last year, I lost my purse somewhere. When I realized it, I was frustrated, and very unhappy. So, I spent the whole day to call different banks to stop payment on my cards, and spent all day outside of my house. Then, when I went back home at 10:00pm, there were huge numbers of calls came in. Almost all my friends were looking for me. Because a good guy picked up my wallet, he tried to call each numbers on my contact book, even my parents in Xi'an, a middle school classmate who is now in Shenzhen. But, nobody knew my number. There were almost 20 people knew that I lost my purse, and everyone tried to find me, no way, until I went back home. Ofc, at last, I got my purse back, and really appreciated that good Samaritan who found my wallet. I guess, that night, there were 20 people everywhere said same thing "what the hell she is doing, why doesn't she have a cell phone".
So, normally, at such moment, people will think, I really need a cell phone. Do I? No, there are some other aspects of different stories.
Then, what are the advantages?
. I will never be disturbed by unwelcome messages. I don't need to suffer the pain of holding a hot line. The last company I worked for, engineers need rotationally man a hot-line, once a month. Every time, when I hold that hot-line, it made me panic. I can not sleep well, eat well. I still remember, that whenever I watched that cell phone, I felt it look like a monster which made me working all day.
. And, I don't need to worry about the embarrass caused by turning on cell phone in a formal setting. Have to say, the most important thing I'm trying to set up is peace of mine which can not be disturbed. What a perfect world to me is that people can find each other using a discreet way. Cell phone is totally opposite to what I thought it would be.
So, as the ending, let me tell some truth.
Honestly, in these couple of years, several times, I thought I might need a cell phone, especially when I saw people using cellphone to take a picture. And, several times, I talked to myself that nobody knows why I insist so much. But, after a second, I would tell myself, “If you can not keep on doing this, how can you be successful on other things”. Yes, I agree with you that I over-react a little. It is no big deal to have a cell phone, and it's not the end of the world. But, this made me feel so unique that I can't tolerate to have a cell phone since that looks like a betrayal to myself.
But, times goes by, I would like to say I might change someday. So, don't laugh at me when I tell you my number someday I might have one although I'm not sure right now, but nobody knows what tomorrow will be.
That's all, hope you have fun my stories.

resume archive something...
It's been a while before I really start to write something here. Many things happened during the past months. I worked on drivers' integration, bug fixing, same as usual, and then I was sick for a while, and now, I am right back working again. Continue the work, this time, it's about Intel wireless driver WPA support. With the integration of WPA soft tkip encryption method, other drivers can take advantages of it easily, such as ral. Especially those drivers which depend on net80211 to handle ieee8011 related part, such as encap/decap, crypto encap/decap, and state machine transfer, etc. But, not all driver work follow the same way. For example, Intel older drivers are different, iwi. It needs to handle state-machine transfered by itself, and has to encap/decap data on its own, while h/w does part of management frame translation work, but just part. So, this driver is quite different. What I did about WPA support are:
. Change driver to support soft encryption firstly, so as to use WPA tkip encryption integrated, which includes correctly set up hardware, successfully set up opt_ie before association, and make sure it's door is opened, etc.
. To successfully support tkip soft encryption, need to make sure:
-
~ c_cap has WPA supported;
~ encap frame after it's copied into one mblk.
~ notify wpad association/dis-association status correctly when state-machine transfered, which is the key point to solve the reconnection issue.

Posted by paintingsky [ent.] ( September 25, 2005 09:38 PM ) Permalink | Comments[3]
Posted by paintingsky [ent.] ( September 25, 2005 09:36 PM ) Permalink | Comments[1]
Posted by paintingsky [ent.] ( September 25, 2005 09:33 PM ) Permalink | Comments[1]
Posted by paintingsky [ent.] ( September 22, 2005 02:40 AM ) Permalink | Comments[0]
Posted by paintingsky [ent.] ( September 22, 2005 02:35 AM ) Permalink | Comments[1]
Posted by paintingsky [ent.] ( September 22, 2005 02:34 AM ) Permalink | Comments[0]
