We launched the Startup Essential's program in the UK last week, offering startups:
  • Rock-bottom prices on systems
  • Discounted Partner Hosting
  • Discounted Storage
  • Free & discounted Services -architecural advice etc.
  • Free Software
It has come apparent that what we need to do is tell the community about why they should use Sun!  People don't seem to know (yet) about the huge technological benefits and price, as well as ecological advantages in using solutions based on Solaris and Sun server hardware starting at ~1000 USD!

Did you know Sun produces low cost 8-core servers?  And has the most scalable, secure and performant OS in the world - Solaris - and it's open source & FREE!!!!!  We even optimise open source software stacks so they run best and take advantage of the great Solaris features.

A follow up to my previous entry:

Last week saw the 2nd Partner Marketing Academy (PMA) taking place in Sun's Offices - near Camberley, UK - an event targeted at our key marketing contacts and those people that own the Sun business within our partner community.  The event built on the success of the last PMA 6 months ago and in that time has gained tremendous momentum and credibility which was clear from the number of attendees which has almost doubled with 40 attendees at the Partner Dinner and over 90 attendees at the PMA.

This is an important 6 monthly event for partners to hear Sun's strategies and plans.  Partner feedback from the last event and from a pre-event questionnaire was used to tailor the agenda to partners needs.  A highlight for me was the inclusion of 2 partner case studies, one from SCC, a long-standing directly managed partner and another from Latitude, a fairly new, smaller partner managed through Avnet.  Both presentations gave us enormous credibility and demonstrated how Sun adds value to partners and how partners add value to Sun and the result = success.

Presentation highlights:

  • Paul Flannery - challenged partners to explore and monetize "the art of the possible"
  • Stefan Huwer and Paul Leonard - RDA, where to focus for opportunity and upside
  • Jay Huff - architecture of the 'marketing supply chain' and how partners can take Sun initiatives to market. (Eco, Enterprise, Commercial HPC, Web Scale,Developers)
  • Geoff Undrell - partner success story around volume and value campaigns - 'does a lot of work for charity'
  • Garry Owen - When to use Try & Buy and when to use Sunseed, the mystery explained
  • Eddie Partridge - partner success story taking Sun 'canned' programmes to market with the Latitude wrapper..... and how it pays to 'stalk' Sun marketing!
  • Laurence James - Climatic change and the eco opportunity, from your friendly weather man
  • Jim Craig - Virtualisation - the hot topic
  • Will Trotman - Enterprise Computing 'Rules OK'

The result was positive feedback from inspired partners.
Thanks to all that were involved in making this another successful event.

In our first attempt to expand the audience of this column to other parts of Europe, here are two events of particular significance to our partners in and around London for the next month or so:

Make it Fly

Thursday 25th October, 8:30 - 1pm
London, Sun City Office

Registration: http://www.makeitfly.co.uk/register.php

Dr Clive King and Phil Harman, will be presenting a morning session on Solaris performance, debugging and what is in the latest release of
Solaris 10, and why it is so cool.
Aimed at a technical audience, any partners developing on Solaris would benefit from this session, from two great Solaris minds.

Session 1: Full contact debugging with the Solaris run-time linker!
The run-time linker(ld.so.1) is fundamental to the operation of Solaris, but few use its numerous powerful debugging features. We discuss the run-time linker, what it does, why its a good idea and how you can use it for debugging a number of classes of problems. We also show how it can be used for time travel!

Session 2: The Yin and Yang of /proc
Procfs is a file system that provides access to the state of each process and light-weight process (lwp) in the system. It’s the foundation upon which debuggers like dbx and mdb are built, as well as tools such as ps, pstack and pmap. procfs is a system where you can have correct, but you can't have fast. To get a consistent, correct snapshot of a process state requires the Solaris kernel to do an awful lot of work and it can impact on system performance if used without thought. This session will help you avoid a very common set of problems as well as considering some of the wider issues around system monitoring.

Session 3: Solaris Greater Than the Sum of its Parts
Solaris technologies such as ZFS, DTrace and Zones are pretty amazing in their own right, but it is the combination of such innovations in one platform which make Solaris so much more than "just another commodity operating system".

Session 4: Solaris 10 8/07 - The fourth update of Solaris 10 brings some very important enhancements to this landmark operating system
platform. The focus of this session will be on those parts of Solaris10 8/07 of particular interest to developers.
