StarOffice and OpenOffice are the desktop tools of choice since they are open, affordable and reliable. This is nothing new for the valued readers of my blog.
It just happens that I got educated from the copy shop around the corner ( R@INBOW, Ringstr. 21, Wiesloch, Germany) why the OpenDocument format and PDF matters for their business. They don't accept anymore customers with word documents. See photo below:
The reminder in their shop reads:
“No printouts from Word (Windows), No printouts from Word (Windows)”
The owner of the shop allowed me to reference him since he lost a lot of time and money in trying to satisfy his customers.
Needless to say that the default pdf generation feature from StarOffice/OpenOffice and the OpenDocument format are the way to go. It doesn't take large institutions like the city of Munich, city of Vienna or the state of Massachusetts to figure out why open formats matter. The copy shop in your neighbourhood may have figured it out already...
