Category specific feeds in Roller Following a question by a colleague from Sun about the possibility to have category specific feeds in Roller, here's the answer.
Category filtering is part of the product already: this is one of the main interest of using a dynamic system such as Roller as opposed to a static/generation based system such as MT where all this stuff has to be regenerated all the time, and at least pre-generated: you just need to add the ?catname=your_category_here parameter to get a filtered output
- at the weblog level: http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/pat/?catname=blogs.sun.com
- at the individual rss level: http://blogs.sun.com/roller/rss/pat?catname=blogs.sun.com
However at the aggregated sitewide rss level it does not seem to work.
http://blogs.sun.com/roller/rss?catname=blogs.sun.com yields nothing.
I need to look into how it's implemented to determine why.

Wordpress founding developer Matthew Mullenweg has posted a few constructive comments about blogs.sun.com. He mostly points to things we need to configure and expose better.
I copy my answer here for my pals managing blogs.sun.com: I have created a blogs.sun.com category for this weblog. Please fellow Sun bloggers to the same so that we can filter the aggregated blogs with the category="blogs.sun.com" query and get a project requirements list autogenerated for the site.
Let's answer in order here:
- Tim Bray proposed WordPress and I was more in favor of Roller because I have experience with it, we know it scales thanks to the JRoller instance, it fit our requirements of hosting multiple blogs, and it's in java so we can hack it to our heart's content. Other people at Sun shared my opinions, so we wen on with Roller. I haven't tried WordPress so I can't judge wether it's better or not.
- Feeds seem strange, can you be more specific? Then we can try to fix that.
- Permalink is a good comment: they exist but currently they are not exposed in the theme I use. I will add this requirement for the Sun theme we develop. This entry, with the category blogs.sun.com indicates that the entry contains a requirements for blogs.sun.com.
For example for my post that you comment about, the permalink is http://blogs.sun.com/pat/20040607#blogs_sun_com_cool_history - Terrible uris, I guess you're talking about the roller/page part of uris: http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/pat/20040607#blogs_sun_com_cool_history
these are not necessary, since we have an Apache front end which rewrite urls: the above axample can be accessed through http://blogs.sun.com/pat/20040607#blogs_sun_com_cool_history which seems good enbough to me, at least as good as your http://photomatt.net/archives/2004/06/08/sunny/#comments :-)
But we need to start expose these and maybe redirect the roller/page uris to their reduced counterparts.
