Re: Cedric about Tim Bray at JavaPolis

In Tim Bray at Javapolis Cedric Beust critizes Tim Bray's Javapolis presentation about java and scripting languages.

" The one I disagree the most with is his assertion that Python is more object-oriented than Java."

I disagree as well, although my experience with Python is very limited, the self variable also struck me as a hack designed to bridge the gap between functional and oo features.

Tim wrote his first Python program very recently, in july, so I'm not surprised by inaccuracies in his statements. But I think that's not the important part of his current activities in this area: I agree with Alexis' comment, looking at Tim's weblog, his goal these days seems to be to shake the java community to accelerate its adoption of scripting languages running in the JVM (Jython, Groovy). I think this is a good thing.

I have given presentations with Tim at Sun about RSS, weblogs and wikis last spring, and noticed how an efficient evangelist he is: he is excellent at simplifying complex technical matters, targeting a few messages for his audience, in order to reach his agenda. He did it very effectively for RSS/Atom/Weblogs in the past year, and seems to target scripting on the VM this year: it sounds like a worthy goal to me, even if the technical aspect of his slides is not always 100% accurate.
