Happy Bloomsday... 2 days too late June 16th was the 100th anniversary of that June 16th 1904 where Leopold Bloom reenacted the Odyssey in Dublin in James Joyce's novel Ulysse. I've never finished Ulysse, although I tried 3 times. I guess I started too late, at a period in my life where I don't have enough time to tackle giant books like "Ulysse", or Proust's "In Search of Lost Time". However I liked the ambition of the book, and the style very much (I still salivate when thinking about roasted kidneys: my grandma used to cook them just right), and will maybe find the time to read it someday. Brian Nitz has a good account of Bloomsday in Dublin this year in his weblog. ( Qer 17 2004, 03:47:54 MD PDT ) Permalink Comments [3] Chat about it Technorati cosmos Tagsurf It

You should finish it - it's possible to read one episode each week if you can find a few hours each weekend. It's also necessary to read 'A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man' beforehand, and nice to have read, 'Dubliners' (The Dead, last story of the book), and Homer's 'Odysseus', and to have Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' on hand. nickf

Like many literate English speakers, I chose to marry my first husband on Bloomsday (because Ulysses is among other things a love story). Joyce and Nora never legally married, but they were a couple until all their lives and he chose the day they met as the "one normally incredible day" upon which Ulysses takes place. -Danese

I've actually read "Dubliners", and loved the film that John Huston made based on "The Dead". Never looked at Ovid. Homer's Odyssey is one of my favorite books, I've read it 3 times, and I used to read it to my daughter in the evening to put her to sleep in her crib when she was 2 month old (I calmed down when she grew older, she's 5 now, because some gory scenes like the Cyclop's eye piercing gave her some nightmares:-). I've read a few pages of the portrait of the artist but got bored. I've read half of Ulysse (in France the classic edition is in 2 volumes), and plan to read the other half when my life's pace will calm down, which is not anytime soon. Glad to hear you married on Bloomsday Danese: happy anniversary! Ulysse a love story... maybe...:-)
