New FREE online Patch Training Courses
I'm delighted to announce the availability of 10 new free online patch training modules.
This is the result of a lot of work from those nice people in Sun Learning Services, the Install Revenue Product Engineering (RPE, a.k.a. Sustaining) team, and my own folk.
The modules concentrate on using Live Upgrade for patching, as well as providing background on Deferred Activation Patching, Kernel patches, and other useful information.
You can access the modules as follows:
- Direct link to the course: Book 3-10: Solaris Patching Best Practices: https://learning.sun.com/solc/tblocontainer/1179270477
- Link to the Sun Online Learning Center (SOLC): https://learning.sun.com/solc/smartstart
I think even experienced Sys Admins will find the modules useful in clarifying patching best practices and providing context and background information on the evolution of patching technology and best practices in Solaris 10.
If you don't like the online course format, or if you want a reference document to refer back to after taking the course, please see the attached .pdf.
Enjoy!
Best Wishes,
Gerry Haskins, Director, Software Patch Services
Good post!
Thank you!

Many thanks to the folks for putting the training and docs together. I've been trying to get a handle on Solaris patching for several years. Everything I found before always seemed incomplete, out-of-date, or geared for some other level of audience.
I haven't gone over the online training but looking though the pdf I see several bad links including one at the bottom of page 28 that's looking for a file on someone's C drive:
Maintaining an Alternate Boot Environment
For more information about maintaining Solaris Live Upgrade, see "Maintaining Solaris Live Upgrade BootEnvironments" in the Solaris 10 10/08 Installation Guide: Solaris Live Upgrade and Upgrade Planning.

Dear Gerry,
while dealing with 'Live Upgrade' due to your posting, things are not that easy, as the nice course suggests. For example:
* The current PDF "Solaris 10 10/09 Installation Guide: Solaris Live Upgrade and Upgrade Planning" is not mentioned, but the old Solaris 10 10/08 PDF.
While checking Patches for Patching - as described - under URL http://sunsolve.sun.com/show.do?target=patchpage "Latest Patch Utility Patches" Patch 122034 is referenced, which is way old (date: Mar/30/06) and two times obsoleted. This is true for 2 other mentioned Solaris 10/SPARC patches.
For now I got the impression, that from a management point of view 'Live Upgrade' sounds very easy, but going into details and at the prompt, it is still the same "fight" with outdated Dokuments, obsoleted hints and still a lot of handwork for an Senior Admin to do.
Best Greetings
Martin
