The other day while taking my lunch break and doing the latest jigsaw the fire alarm sounded. I left the area where I was and walked out in what I thought was the most direct way out of the building. Tim called to me and showed me a fire exit which was right where I was. Recently we have moved to a new office area and I had not taken the time or trouble to find the nearest emergency exit yet and we have not had a fire thrill [sic]. So it made me think about what we should do when an alarm goes off and how we prepare for it. We all know that when we sit in plane most people do not study the safety card or listen to the announcement or watch the safety video. You just imagine it won't happen to you ( or it will do much good as you crash into the ground from 30,000 feet). I also think at home we might have smoke alarms but do you have run drills for your family - we don't. How you get out of a house when there is a real emergency and the stairs are blocked? It is a pretty frightening thought but it seems to me now worth the trouble to prepare for the worst and be able to survive such an incident. ( Jun 09 2006, 12:00:01 AM PDT ) Permalink |
