Recycle

The UK has kicked off a recycle now campaign. As it turns out we are the poor relation to other countries in relation to recycling our rubbish.

The problem is each county in the UK has its own recycling methods, some better or worse than others. We are under the control of the Wokingham District Council who I would say are average. Tins and plastic bottles are collected from supplied bins, paper and card also. Glass has to be taken to your nearest bottle bank and other stuff like foil has to go to the nearest 'Waste reception' for us Bracknell. There it is well organised and they publicise the fact that staff will direct you to place items in certain areas. They give away free compost from the green rubbish they get from us all. The problem is it is still composting and warm and would scorch plants if it came into contact with them. Looking at the pile of green waste they get, it is mainly grass and tree clippings which is not a good mix.

European directives will mean the UK has to sort itself out, in our area the number of gravel pits has meant suitable dumping grounds have until recently been available. I think an idea would be to have a levy on those folks who have more than XYZ Kg of waste per week. XYZ could be calculated on the number of people in the household of course.
