Monday January 31, 2005 After a week in which at least two US army helicopters and an RAF Hercules crashed due to as yet unknown causes, Afghani authorities announced they were seeking to try persuade the population to hand in any old stinger missiles they might still have lying around.

The first helicopter crash was a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter, not a U.S. Army helicopter.
While the causes of all of the crashes may not have been published yet, it is extremely unlikely the Marine helicopter was downed by a Stinger or similar missile. The bad weather in the area (duststorms) that likely contributed to the crash would have made targeting the helicopter very difficult.
