Ken's Java Blog

Ken Paulsen has been working for Sun Microsystems, Inc. since 1999. His primary focus has been on Web Application Frameworks, in fact, he has built a couple of his own (see the JSFTemplating Java.net project). Recently his interests have been centered around AJAX and JavaServer™ Faces, in particular how these technologies apply to the GlassFish Admin GUI. Ken is also a member of the JSF 2.0 Expert Group (JSR-314).

20090225 Looking for Opinions...

The GlassFish admin console team has been working hard on ways to simplify our development, while at the same time attempting to improve the experience of using the console.  We have created a prototype which shows a couple different designs we are considering -- we'd like your feedback.  Here's how you can help:

Here are some things we are particularly interested in feedback on:

Of course all other comments are also welcome (What's missing?  What do
you really like?  What do you hate? etc.).  We know there are many
issues with this UI, it is an early prototype -- far from production
ready.  Just a few of the major issues we're aware of:

So... as you can see we're not looking for bugs, but rather general feedback on the navigation and Look-and-Feel.  So post your thoughts and help make GlassFish better. :)

Thanks for taking a look!

between the two, I prefer the tree view.

The main reason is that I can navigate between pages faster. Because expanding one node does not collapse others, It also lets me quickly bounce between things. i.e. the jdbc resources and connection pools. Finally, it is also easier to see where I am in the grand scheme of things by looking at the left nav tree.

anyway, my 0.02 worth

ad tags: tags are a nice feature, but server administration console is not social network. I will expect that an adminstrator doesn't tags to find pages in the console.
i liked the menu and the tree view and also the toggle cheme feature

clustering support?

Cluster support will come and will be supported in the console as soon as v3 has official clustering support. I don't have dates yet on when that will be.

I like the tree view more than menus, but what i would like the most is embedded performance data and links.

For example : Helloworld ( a sparkline goes here showing the performance of app ) [] button like this which shows up actions for webapp start stop restart etc...

I like the tree view as gives quick navigation across, certain nodes can be default expanded based on the usage pattern.
