finding spinrad essays
happy day: i just received a copy of norman spinrad's
science
fiction in the real world, southern illinois
university press, 1990. i did not know spinrad had published a collection
of his essays (well, essays disguised as book reviews) from Asimov's;
i found out about it through one of
the essential
references of SF: barron's
anatomy of wonder: a critical guide to science fiction, now in its fifth
edition. [great content, utterly uninspiring cover; fourth edition had a much
better graphic designer, evidently]
The Sturgeon and Dick pieces are passionate and moving, and Spinrad's treatment
of cyberpunk is among the best early accounts available.
yep.
as an aside, one of my favorite non-SF-related pieces by norman spinrad is
la
cuisine humaine.
[there has been many more essays and reviews since 1990; i hope they get collected
as well.]
