gregory mcgarry did a performance comparison between
NetBSD 2.0 and FreeBSD 5.3. the paper is
here. the benchmarks test core
os functionality, scalability and thread implementation.
very impressive: looks like netbsd is going far and fast. [i actively
use both,
but netbsd has been
running my core mail/web server and in my voyagers and aging vaio for
a long time...]

when i first installed the mail/web server, it was on a sparc10, <em>netbsd ran faster</em> and the software i needed either came with it, or built and installed trivially. (this was before the freeware cd) when i later re-installed it on a 300mhz pc, <em>solaris x86 was no longer a product</em>.
if i have to redo it, i may think about using s10/x86...
