recently noted books

richard dawkins, the god delusion
goetz et al. java concurrency in practice
gerald m. weinberg, weinberg on writing: the fieldstone method [he has a related blogspot] [reviews]
sam harris, letter to a christian nation
edward tufte, beautiful evidence
james morrow, the last witchfinder
charles stross, glasshouse

[i consider dawkins, tufte, and harris essential additions to my library. i was very pleased to stumble across weinberg's considerable insights on writing. goetz book appears to be the kind of book no serious programmer [with or without java] should do without. morrow and stross need no elaboration.]

I guess "recently noted" means "taken note of", not "read". Because the Dawkins (essential, I agree) isn't out yet.

Meanwhile, I recommend the festschrift on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of The Selfish Gene. Lots of worthy contributors.

I also recommend the anthology edited by Paul Kurtz et al, Science and Religion: Are They Compatible?. A wide range of perspectives, including some unexpected ones.

(And on an administrative note, you really should remove me from the sun bloggers category. I'm presently "unaffiliated", although this is a situation that I plan to rectify in a matter of weeks.)

geoff, thanks for the comments. indeed, "recently noted" is my shorthand for "just noticed it and ordered it" [but wanted to avoid mentioning "ordered" part" because my wife visits my blog from time to time... :-]

dawkins festschrift just arrived. did not have a chance to read it yet. thanks for the kurtz anthology. i'll check it out.

i moved you from "sun bloggers" to "friends". i hope that is ok.
