Solaris "JAGRAN"- An Awakening...

Back Blogging...

Well everu now and then something jsut keeps happening at NITRourkela which just makes proud to be at NITR. The latest feather was the just concluded Solaris workshop conducted at the turn of the month. It was supervised and well guided by Mr. Pravas Panda(Sun Engineer) . We began by working out a refresher on the various Solaris concepts like virtualization, had a brief into the role played by various solaris daemons in setting up communications with other hosts.

Then we had an insight into CFF and a brief talk about how AWESOME OSUM is !!!

We had about 80 people attending the session ... though I had my doubts about people turning up with exams a couple of days away. But I was relieved the room was at least half filled.

The next report would basically be after the new year , so do keep looking now and then....

A New Dawn At Sun Club of NITR- SFD

With the new faces making way and making a claim for anything and everything, Sun Club couldn't have been behind.

I am quite proud to see more and more faces stepping forward and extending there arms to pass forward the baton of the open source ideas.

Well new session and new people make way for new ideas to be implemented. Well what better than the success of Software Fundation Day. It received overwhelming responce from the students of NITR as well as from the neighbouring institutes.

There were day long sessions on Netbeans, Solaris and Java. We had invited Mr. Prayas Mohanty for a QA session on Solaris especially its kernel architecture.

The day concluded with an online exam on Java. All in all we had 157 participants involved in SFD.
Guess things can only look brighter.

Success of JAVA Classes at NITR

The current popularity of OOP using JAVA has motivated us at SunClub of NITR to start Java SE classes in the institute premises. The idea is to make sure that the students are exposed to the programming ease of JAVA. Use of Netbeans IDE has been cleverly integrated into the module thereby giving them a first hand experience on the usage of IDEs and application development. We plan to move into a few details of web programming as well before the end of this semester.

Hope this noble works out fine. Thanks to all the members of the SunClub of NITR for helping in making this a success thus far.

Demonstration on Solaris

4 sessions in 2 weeks ... doesnt it seem tough.

Well I am proud that our group was good enough to get through this tough stage rather easily. The final demo of this semester was conducted on Solaris features on 14th November by Mr. Pravas Panda (Sun Engineer and Solaris Developer). Though on a personal visit to Rourkela Mr. Panda was kind enough to spend some time with us.

He guided us through ho to fix bugs in Solaris, discussed the issue of security in Solaris and gave an account on process synchronisation in Solaris...

Well thats it folks....

We will try and have one more session on Sun Studio but time will say how successful we can be given the examinations are about to start in a week.

Netbeans Demo (Hands on Labs Session)

Hi folks!

I am back and this time with some interesting news regarding the Netbeans.

Well sadly the turn out for the Netbeans was below expectations but I am pretty glad to inform you about the level of interest we have been able to generate among the freshers.

These guys hardly knew anything about OOP before they attended the session. We tried our best to give them the shortest possible introductions to classes, objects etc and it seemed they just didnt care for what we were saying. Instead they were pretty busy creating their own GUIs and applets. We helped them in the end regarding adding listeners and all and Bingo we had our first Netbeans projects.

Gunned by their enthusiasm for Java, the Sun club of NITR is planning to conduct a course on J2SE in the forthcoming semester.

The presentations were made by Siddharth, Soumya and then I chipped in with a few explanations.

Here are some pics to enjoy......
