old age home visit - Volunteer Week

"Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years.  We grow old by deserting our ideals.  Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul"  said Samuel Ullman and all SUN employees who visited Mothers of Shambhavi Shanthidhama experienced this first hand. *ENTHUSIASM* to participate, *COMPETITIVE SPIRIT* in playing games and *FAMILY CULTURE* supporting each other displayed by 70+years young mothers were lessons for all 20+years  old employees.

About 40 Sun employees, relatives and friends visited the Shambavi Shanthidama old age home in Bangalore on 16th of April. All spent some truly memorable moments with the inmates and lit up their lives! The day started off with a fun event "passing-the-ball" where the inmates had to perform anything of their choice. Few opted sing a song(mostly vachanas by Basavanna and Akka Mahadevi filled with life lessons), some shared their life experiences. The enthusiasm was all too apparent and all of us enjoyed the game. Medicines and groceries were given to the Mothers after the event and this was followed by delicious lunch prepared in Ashram.

Post lunch, we had a music recital by differently abled people. Both the inmates and the visitors were awestruck by the talent of the performers, both of whom were blind. More importantly, the perseverance and grit exhibited in honing their skills was a true inspiration. Few songs though devotional got your feet tapping and made you want to jump into the dance floor. Then a game of Tambola was played and all the grannies participated with great enthusiasm and fervor ! Gifts were given away to lucky winners. One could see both excitement in the winners' faces and disappointment in those of who lost, exhibiting that there is still a lot of spirit left in them ! A Vote of thanks was given by the care taker of the home filled with wishes and prayers for us.
We all dispersed carrying with us memories of what was a truly memorable day reminding us of Mark Twain who said "Age is an issue of mind over matter.  If you don't mind, it doesn't matter"
