In my last blog entry I mentioned I was in Kenya. After more then one week going through pictures I took there I have them ready on internet.

My Kenya set on Flickr

There are quite a lot of pictures. So, only few samples. Please note the last but one photo and the logo on the car. It's pity I haven't seen there any Solaris logo. I think we should consider Kenya and Africa itself. Africans are also surfing the net, sending SMS and overall doing things like everywhere else...

It was just yesterday's morning when I was still in Kenya with it's temperature more than 30 degrees of Celsius. Now I am back in Prague with it's temperature just something above zero (with no sun). What a change! Hope I won't be cold.

Beside this there are floods in Czech republic. Here in Prague, they are not major. At least what I could see in center. But still there were built floods barriers, which were prepared after major floods in 2002.

Last weekend we had here in Prague just another OpenSolaris event organized by CZOSUG. This time it was BootCamp and InstallFest.

BootCamp Invitation

It was held in one of the Charles University buildings in very center of Prague. You can see that the building is very old. I was warned, that there can be ghosts in there. But I am used to them, so it wasn't problem for me...

Very old building Castle could be also seen from window

In the morning there was one presentation by Martin Cerveny about things you should know to be able to do basic administration of Solaris box. At that time organizers were finishing preparations for InstallFest.

Martin Cerveny speaking, speaking... Quite a lot of people

InstallFest itself started in the afternoon. There were several guys who really came and installed Solaris. We could see different types of hardware. Hopefully more on that will have Lukas in his blog entry. I would also mentioned nice debat with guys from Czech SuSE. Yes, we don't support bluetooth nor OpenSolaris will boot on ARM, but wait. We will see in a few years.

In Paralell with InstallFest, BootCamp continued with yet another presentation by Martin Cerveny about driver development and presentation about USB devices and mainly connecting USB CDMA modem to Solaris by Vita Batrla and Milan Jurik.

New version of another OpenSolaris distribution Nexenta is out. Seems a lot of changes is in it: new installer, KDE, Wifi support and lots of others... Will have to check it. The only problem for now is that the live CD is not linked anywhere on their pages. One must be patient :-)

New version of OpenSolaris distribution SchillX was announced today. It's based on OpenSolaris build 31.

Wednesday Jan 11, 2006

Yesterday there was just another Czech OpenSolaris user's group meeting (CZOSUG). It was fourth such a meeting and this time we had a special guest - Jörg Schilling, the author of SchilliX and cdrtools.

There were two presentations. First was done by Jörg Schilling and it was about background of the first OpenSolaris distribution - SchilliX. He explained how he could come with this distribution so soon after sources of OpensSolaris were published, problems to which he had to face (and how long it took him to solve them). He also mentioned cooperation between people around SchilliX and Blastwave. He plans made Blastwave packages to run with SchilliX as soon as X Server and Solaris package database will be incorporated. Schilling also mentioned PowerPC port of Operating System Solaris (also known as Polaris). He expects first version of SchilliX for PowerPC this summer.

Interesting was also later discussion where Jörg explained his attitude towards some GNU tools and explained why he introduced some of his tools: strar, smake, sfind (note that ssh is not abbreviation for Schilliy's shell and it has nothing to do with Schilling ;-). But overall I got very nice feeling about Jörg and I think it's great we have such a people in OpenSolaris community.

After small break Frank Hofmann talked about Operating System Virtualisation. He has got nice overview of the topic but some of us were missing some practical examples on live system (BrandZ). But anyway it's great to have Frank coming to Prague regularly.

Overall it was nice evening and it seems that number of attending people is growing. My roughly guess for number of attenders was about forty heads.

There is a lot of snow here in middle Europe and it's understandable that trains are getting late. But one would say that it's predictable. Unfortunately Czech Railways (CD) are not capable of it. At the time when my train was supposed to leave to Prague we were informed by information panel, that it will be 15 minutes delayed..... The delay changed then to 25, 40, 60, 80 minutes.... If I knew this at once, I would take the bus.

Right now I am sitting in completely different train (I didn't want to risk and wait for my fast Eurocity from Wien) and If I am lucky enough, I will be in Prague only three hours later than were my first plans.

After 66 years of broadcasting in Czech, BBC stopped today its current affairs program. Czech language will totally disappear from BBC radio here in Czech republic by the end of January. The reason for closing Czech BBC redaction (and some other European and Asian) is to gain money for creation of TV for Arab world.

I am not happy with this decision and I am not alone in such feelings. Actually I am little bit angry at BBC for this step. Yes, it's selfish. We are now democratic country and our media have full freedom of speech. But I cannot rid of sensation that BBC was little bit more... I will miss you BBC!

Ok, Vita already mentioned that in his blog entry. So, just only two other photos. I can only say, that I was missing some examples on live system. The slides and rather old flash presentation was not the best choice. But it would be probably complicated to prepare such environment.

Prague today.

It's coming. One should be aware of it...

Yes, it's enough. I have never wanted to do such a crazy thing. It was this Friday's evening when I decided to take short walk to the downtown to see newly set up Christmas tree. Since I knew there is film festival of France film (Festival du film français) this week I went past the cinema where it take place. It was just coincidence that I just arrived there at 11pm when the Movie night was just starting. So I said to myself. Let's try the first movie and then I will see. When it was over and we were leaving the cinema it was about 6:45am...

There were four movies: Kilometré Zero (2004), No Man's Land (2005), Vodka Lemon (2003) and Intervention Divine (2001). Between the movies everybody was offered hot chocolate and crosants to survive till the 'Intervention Divine'. I liked the movies very much. There were not many happy ends in them but sometimes we could laugh little bit. At least this is the only thing how we can survive it and not get crazy. Movies were about old Iraqi regime, Yugoslavian conflict, situation in poor post Soviet states and Palestine conflict. A lot of stuff to think about...

So, you know, I was today little bit resting then to be able to go this evening finally to real French movie :-). I mean French and from France. Ahh Paris..... It was Doo Woop (2004) and it was Czech preliminary premiere. There were also director of this movie and three main actors.

The festival will finish on Monday. It worth to visit it.

Thursday Nov 10, 2005

It has just finished. There were two presentations. The first short one was about the OpenSolaris news and existing OpenSolaris distributions (it was presented by me ;-). The other one was presented by Frank Hofmann and it was called 'DTrace backend implementation on Solaris x86/x64'. I can only say that people were really astonished by Frank's presentation and DTrace capability. Here are some pictures taken during Frank's presentation.

I expect that Lukas will write little bit more about this event. And I hope that we will have someone so knowledgeable here in Prague soon again.

Dec 16, 2005: My presentation about OpenSolaris distributions can be downloaded here.
