Install Fest in BUPT on March 8th
Last Sunday, March 8th, was a very special International Women's Day for me. No shopping on that big "On Sale" day. On the Thursday of that week, I got invitation from Pocky Lam, the president of BLUG , for the Install Fest in BeiYou university (Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications), which was particular for the most popular open source operating systems, such as OpenSolaris, Fedora, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu.
The fact showed that it was indeed a meaningful holiday for me. I got very supportive helpers, William, Forrest, Rebecca and Robert in the Install Fest. And many students got impressed by William's speech for OpenSolaris Introduction and Forrest's speech for ZFS. I was jealous that there were always students gathering around them to ask questions and asked help for installation of OpenSolaris 2008.11.
We were very glad to see the students' enthusiasm for new technology and we also got surprised that one of them was very familiar with ZFS and other file systems. And because the event was successful and yesterday there was a fresh invitation to hold another Install Fest in Beiyou university again, but in a different district. The planned event is supposed to happen on this weekend March 15th. Probably we will have some different helpers this time.
I've been attending/participating Beijing OpenSolaris User Group events on last Thursday of EVERY MONTH, since Jan. 2008. It is still a very different feeling to participate activities in school. Especially when walking down the avenue in the campus, surrounding by energetic teenagers, we are easily to be brought back to those good old days. It's probably the real Pure Spring I've been looking for.

Meeting with Jim Grisanzio and some updates recently
Yesterday (Sep 24), our team (Asian Globalization team) had a wonderful meeting with Jim Grisanzio.
And he blogged about our meeting. Check it at meeting globally.
He is coming for 20th Beijing OpenSolaris user group meeting (Sep 25), where he will give a talk about Building an Open Community.
Some updates:
1. We succeeded to hold our first Chengdu OpenSolaris User Group Salon in Chengdu on August 23rd, one cafe house near Sichuan University.
The atmosphere
in the salon was harmonious and enthusiastic. Ardent discussing and kind
communications were running through in the whole meeting.
Moreover,Eric Guo, who belongs to the Sale Group based in Chendu,
offer tremendous supports for this activity. We are so glad that
he is the one of the core team of the user group and gave much
contribution.
Three sections were included in the salon. the first was the
introduction. The second one was presenting the Wonderland,
which was made by BaiXianPing, a Campus ambassador, and
"OpenSolaris vs Linux" by Eric Guo, and the Opensolaris new
features, demostrating installation of Indiana. the last
section is QA and discussion.

2. I was invited to an talk show by Mozilla Online. The interviewed was given by ZOL (Zhong Guan Cun Online) on August 13th. Topic was related with Open Source. The whole process was very interesting. I indeed had fun there. Check video here.

2008年5月17日 震后北川

5月12日汶川大地震以后，总是有很多故事和报道不停的感动着我。每每读到，看到，听到这些事迹的时候
，眼里总是噙着泪花。虽然自己也在5月12日那天下午亲历了大地震的震撼（所幸的是市区并未受到大面积的毁害）
，但是今天的中国领导人大无畏的精神和魄力，以及国人前所未见的团结精神一直鼓舞着自己。从那时起，自
己就特别想做一名志愿者，为重灾区的人民做点什么。
昨天终于有了一个机会去实现自己的这个愿望。接到通知，驻扎北川的某部队需要一些133的手机卡（地震以
后CDMA的信号一直比GSM的好）。中午12点的时候就跟随联通的工作人员去给部队送手机卡，以及一些食品和
口罩。
一路上，心里写着两个字：沉重。从绵阳到北川的二级公路，途径安县境内。路上有很多本地和外地的志愿者
运送物资的私家车还有部队的大卡车。
初入安县的时候已经依稀可见一些垮塌的房屋和建筑物。越往北川开情况越是不好。房屋坍塌的情况很严重。
两侧的路边上好多从山上滚下来的巨石（基本3，4米见方）。路过的水泥厂那些高大的设备和楼房已经垮掉近
2/3。一个多小时以后，我们的车停在离北川县城2公里以外的一个部队驻地。联通的抢险车也停靠在这边。为
了保证通信畅通，他们从12号晚上到这里就没回过绵阳。我们把手机卡和食品口罩交接给他们以后，便步行去
往北川县城里。因为县城里面的路已经没有办法走了，而且路的两侧都是一些救援队伍的帐篷。所以很多车都
是停在县城外面。因为需要防疫，我们喝了点水，戴上口罩以后就往县城里去了。因为同行的有在北川联通营
业厅工作的，地震那天正好他们的汽车在绵阳大修没有进山，所以幸运的躲过了这次浩劫，但是他们的家人和
亲戚就没有那么幸运了。一路上倾听着他们述说这里原来的样子。的确，人在大自然面前如此渺小，昨天还一
个生气蓬勃的川北小县城，现在基本成了平地。当我们踏入部队连夜开发出的生命之路进入北川老城区的时候
，这里基本上已经看不到什么楼房了。在废墟上偶然有一两栋稍微完整的楼房，据说以前是坐落在山坡上地震
时整体滑落的。很难以想象当时的北川人民经历了一场什么样的磨难。身边的部队官兵，救援人员，一队一队
的路过。一种崇敬油然而生。从北川的路打通以后他们就一直忙碌着挽留这里民众的生命。粉碎性垮塌，巨石
，粉尘，异味充满了整个县城。远远的废墟上有一些官兵还在忙碌着，给人一种希望。一支地震救援队正在用
生命探测仪寻找生命的气息。再往里走就是北川新城区，这里的情况稍微好一些，但是基本上2/3的楼房也没
有了，剩下的也残缺不全。路越来越难走。重型机械也无法深入，这里的路基本上是官兵们用手一点一点的挖
出来的。是他们不懈的努力让被困在废墟中的人们看到一丝希望。北川大酒店前的公路被地震拱起了5米之高
。旁边的一条支路也断裂，成了两层楼高的大坑。走到北川大酒店前，还有两支队伍坐成方阵，正在待命。到
这里，我的心情已经无法形容。为难者的悲恸，为部队官兵的崇敬。生命的可贵正是在于这种大无畏的助人精
神。前面的路会越来越难走，希望这些救援人员能够保重。愿他们平安。那些曾经为生命挣扎过的灵魂能够在
这片生养他们的地方安息。
还有一段小插曲。我们止步于北川大酒店门口，便折返了。步行一公里处的时候，看见有些士兵在往外撤兵，
原以为是炸石开路。后来看见重型机械也撤出才知道是上面快要决堤了。疾步到停车的地方，开出没有10分钟
，接到电话说上面已经开始淹水了。我这时特别特别希望酒店门口修整待命的士兵还有在废墟上工作的救援人
员能够安全撤离。
返回绵阳的路上心情更加沉重了，但是对于生命的意义也有了更高的认识。珍惜生命的每一分钟，为国家，社
会，人民做贡献。危难之时尽自己绵薄之力。
生如夏花，死若秋叶。
愿生者平安，愿故去的灵魂能够安息。
注：从12日开始就在余震中过着每一天，到目前为止，已经有两次比较大的6级左右的余震，特别是昨夜凌晨1
点9分在江油的6级余震让我们从稍微平静的生活中又开始战时般的避震生活。

Toastmaster - Special #6 Ribbon for My Project #6
Yes, I got my #6 ribbon for best speaker in yesterday's Toastmaster weekly meeting.
It was quite special meeting, that I was the only speaker but I had 4 evaluators to evaluate my speech.
I felt so surprised when I got to know that I was the only prepared speech speaker when I stepped into the conference room.
Soon I found that this week's regular meeting was changed for Evaluation Contest. Winner (best evaluator) will attend next month's Zhong Guancun Toastmaster meeting.
My speech went well. I got comments for these 4 evaluators and listed 8 points to improve my future speech. It is really helpful when evaluators gave both weak points and strong points of the speech.
I also got one comment after meeting, said that I was more confident when delivering speech than before.
Good to know my step by step progress from TM meeting. : )

CDOSUG Core Team Meeting #2
Just came back from our #2 meeting with CDOSUG core team members. (#1 was on March 17.)
The last CDOSUG group event on March 1 was quite successful. We now have 8 members in our CDOSUG core team. 5 among them are non-Sun employees. Our regular core team meeting is held every Monday afternoon via telephone, since most of them are based in Chengdu.
Now we are planning to have another big CDOSUG event in Sichuan university, in the middle of May (probably on 17th). Our core team members will show their biggest passions for this event and it is really worth to look forward to the event held by pure community members. ")

集群 (Cluster)，通俗地来说就是利用一些相互独立的计算机作为一个整体对外提供服务，其主要目的是为

Chengdu OpenSolaris User Group (CDOSUG)
Chengdu OpenSolaris User Group (CDOSUG) is the first OpenSolaris user group set up in west part of China,after Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. It was founded right before Chinese New Year, on Feb 4th, 2008.
The purpose of creating Chengdu OpenSolaris User Group is to let more students/developers in Chengdu,
who are interested in Open Source technology and Open Solaris, have their own community to discuss and
share information. So far, there are some famous/important universities in Chengdu, e.g UESTC, Sichuan
unviersity, etc., which possess high quality of education and incubate lots of acquainted people.
There will be coming event for the first activity of Chengdu OpenSolaris User Group.
Anyone who has interest is welcomed to the event.

Mozillaonline L10n Core Meeting
First of all, Merry Christmas, everyone! (Frohe Weihnachten ; ))
In the past Saturday, I attended Mozillaonline l10n core meeting. It was a very special meeting for Mozilla l10n community, since Mozillaonline invited 7 core members from Mozilla l10n community, who came from different parts of China. Most of them (above 90%) didn't see each other before but has been working with each other for more than 5 years! It was a great chance for me to meet some of them, who am working with for a while, like Holy Wen (Mozilla l10n community lead). We knew each other quite for some time. This was our first meeting. He was quite a nice person and passionate as well. Thanks to his enthusiasm, Mozilla l10n community is well organized and drove to each mile stone. Besides our talk on how to improve the schema and process and enhance collaborative work among community members (a web based tool is needed to solve the issue), I asked him about how to make use of time to do all these community things. He smiled and said "squash time". As I know, this community folk has his own daily job, but he can make 4 hours a day to help the community's every further step. How great he is! Not if I meet him in person, I wouldn't feel so affected by these community folks who contributed a lot but never ask for any returns. The meeting lasted for 4 hours and it was interesting to know how they get started with Mozilla community, how they work together, and how they solve problem they faced. They are just normal/common people, but undoubtedly, they build up the best opensource community in China.

Turn around
Our lab has been quiet for a long time. There has been no gathering dinner among our classmates for a few days. But last weekend we had one. The theme was that one classmate was on business trip to Beijing. Since he was a member of our lab when we were graduates, all of the lab members who were in Beijing now organized a dinner for him. During our talk, we got to know that he was now working in Chengdu(ericsson). When we graduated, he worked in Chengdu. Then he went to Shanghai and worked there. And now he works in Chengdu again. And he is so called first Chengdu ericsson software engineer.:) In the end he said it was cozy to live and work in Chengdu. I think I should agree with him.

Came back from SUN Tech Days 2007
Sun Techdays 2007 was held successfully in Beijing from Nov. 1 to Nov. 3.
Comparing with previous one, this year's tech day has some differences from last year's.
There were more developers attending this year's techday, around 5k registration for the first day's meetings. For the third day's OpenSolaris Day, there were around 180 people in the one day meeting.
And more exciting thing is that I had the opportunity to be the host for OpenSolaris Beijing user group meeting. : )
It was really a fresh experience for me. Since I am a member of Speakeasy@sunbeijing Toastmaster club, and I practice a little bit from each TM meeting, I didn't felt nervous and I found that I like to give some impromptu talks other than prepared speeches. It was really amazing experience. A colleague told me that he didn't find my talk was that literary during our everyday talk before, and he liked my hosting style. I was happy to hear so. And I am also grateful for so many attendees on the spot, because all of them have the passion for OpenSolaris, for OpenSource.
Only one comment for the whole tech day activity is that they provided SunRays for users to try, but the server was quite slow and there were no Chinese fonts and locale on the JDS. They were not good experiences for most Chinese users, I guess.
