Robin Wilton's esoterica

Heads up, folks!

This is (primarily) to the rest of the b.s.c. community... You might want to check out James Governor's blog over at Redmonk (today's entry). He's got some suggestions about what Sun should do with its software portfolio. As it happens, I think we're doing some of it already. In fact, one of James' recommendations is "don't give [the software cannibal team] any marketing budget". That's probably why he hasn't heard some of what you folks are up to ;^)

I'm shortening the odds...

According to this article, which I didn't spot until rather late yesterday, the Lords do not intend to cave in on the ID Cards Bill, so we can expect them to try to get further amendments before the bill goes back to the Commons once again. I don't know what the convention is... whether they can simply put back in the changes which the Commons reversed last time, or whether they have to find new objections --- but I'll keep an eye on it and let you know.

Lords still have stomach for a fight

I blogged earlier about next Monday's second reading of the ID Cards Bill in the House of Lords. At the time, I said I had no idea whether they would be minded to re-instate the changes they made last time, and which were subsequently reversed when the Bill went back to the Commons. On the basis of this story I am inclined to venture a prediction. On the second reading of the Terrorism Bill, the Lords re-iterated their objection to the term 'glorification of terrorism' (see my previous blogs on why the evident subjectivity of this term is a legislative problem). So I suspect that maybe the ID Cards Bill is in for another refined mauling on Monday...

Toothbrushes - the addendum...
