... but it's still worth a post. Dave pointed me to this article in the Daily Telegraph, which describes a legislative faux pas at the Home Office. Allegedly.
According to Criminal Law Week (subscription required), the Identity Card Bill 2006 repeals some of the existing laws concerning the possession of forged passports. Unfortunately the new provisions intended to supersede those have not come into force yet...apparently making it temporarily legal to hold a false passport. I've signed up for a free trial subscription at CLW, so if their article contains any gems I'll let you know.
Meanwhile, according to the Telegraph, the Home Office "said last night that it was convinced that the existing law on forged passports remained in force."
That said, we should perhaps also bear in mind John Reid's recent comments about his new department:
'He warned the MPs all figures he gave should have a "health warning" because in his first two weeks in the job he had found Home Office figures had always seemed liable to change.'
So a retraction may be only hours away.
