Robin Wilton's esoterica

Three birds with one stone...

Sometimes several disparate things come together, and it's good.

I've been looking, for a few weeks, for some 'seep hose' - the crumby black porous stuff made from recycled rubber. It's a good, water-friendly way to help plants cope with the (comparatively) dry conditions we're having at the moment, especially if you hook it up to a barrel of diverted rainwater.

The problem is, seep hose seems to have vanished from the retail scene. I did find some at one garden centre, but they seemed to be out to prove that 'green is expensive', pricing it at almost£2 per metre. I decided to look for an alternative... what to use?

Back in the garden, I found some ordinary garden hose which has seen better days: the green type with a black inner core and a criss-cross mesh of reinforcing threads. This length has been out for some time, and sun and frost have conspired to make it start to harden and become brittle. Not much use for anything else...

So that's two questions dealt with; the third one was "what's that thing for on a Swiss army penknife? You know... the one they say is for taking stones out of horses' hooves." Turns out it's just the thing for perforating a hose every foot or so.

The hose is now hooked up to a barrel, and is slowly leaking water around the base of some growing beech and hazel bushes.
