"Data at Rest.. Data at Risk"?

For all the pressure to educate users about keeping their personal data safe, it is hard for me to shake off the impression that the greatest risk arises from circumstances which the user's behaviour is almost powerless to influence.

This recent reported lapse at AT&T, exposing some 19,000 sets of customer details (including credit card details) is as good an example as any. Short of simply not giving their credit card details to any third party, it's hard to see how AT&T's subscribers could modify their behaviour in a way which would mitigate this particular risk.

At this stage I was going to refer to the "Willy Sutton riposte" (i.e. that identity thieves go for corporate identity repositories because that's where the identities are), but a glance at the relevant Wikipedia article suggests that apparently he disowned the remark.

There's a rich irony in someone who had no scruples about robbing banks suddenly coming over all squeamish when it comes to appropriating someone else's bon mot. Better men than he have succumbed to the temptation.
